CNTA'S PHONE CENTRE HANDLES OVER 68,000 CALLS

THE CENTRAL TELEPHONE ENQUIRY CENTRE (CTEC) OF THE CITY AND NEW TERRITORIES ADMINISTRATION (CNTA) HANDLED A TOTAL OF 68,871 ENQUIRIES FROM JANUARY TO JUNE THIS YEAR, AN INCREASE OF SIX PER CENT OVER THAT RECORDED IN THE SAME PERIOD IN 1993.

A CNTA SPOKESMAN TODAY (SUNDAY) SAID MOST OF THE QUESTIONS CONCERNED TYPHOON SITUATIONS; APPLICATION FOR BIRTH, DEATH AND MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES; AND THE LOCATIONS AND OPENING HOURS OF VARIOUS GOVERNMENT OFFICES.

THE RENT OFFICER SCHEME; STATUTORY DECLARATION SERVICE; GOVERNMENT JOB VACANCIES; APPLICATION FOR BRITISH PASSPORTS AND PUBLIC HOUSING WERE ALSO HIGH ON THE ENQUIRY LIST.

THE TELEPHONE ENQUIRY CENTRE WAS SET UP IN APRIL 1991 TO BACK UP THE SERVICES RENDERED BY THE 20 PUBLIC ENQUIRY SERVICE CENTRES (PESCS) IN VARIOUS DISTRICT OFFICES THROUGHOUT THE TERRITORY.

OPERATES FROM 8.45 AM TO 5.15 PM ON WEEKDAYS AND FROM 9 AM TO NOON ON SATURDAY.

MEANWHILE, ABOUT 13,788 PEOPLE APPROACHED THE PESCS TO ENQUIRE ABOUT THE FREE LEGAL ADVICE SCHEME DURING THE PAST SIX MONTHS.

AND A TOTAL OF 1,744 REFERRALS WERE SUBSEQUENTLY MADE ΤΟ THE HONG KONG LAW SOCIETY.

THE MAJORITY OF THESE CASES INVOLVED MATRIMONIAL, MONETARY, COMMERCIAL AND EMPLOYMENT MATTERS.

THE FIGURES WERE 13,278 AND 1,427 RESPECTIVELY IN THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR.

UNDER THE SCHEME, WHICH IS JOINTLY ORGANISED BY THE CNTA AND THE LAW SOCIETY, LAWYERS GIVE ADVICE ON CIVIL MATTERS AT FIVE DISTRICT OFFICES TO APPLICANTS REFERRED TO THEM BY THE PESC STAFF.
