GOOD PERSONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE AND SAFE FOOD ARE THE STRONGEST SHIELD TO GUARD AGAINST GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISEASES, THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF HEALTH (HYGIENE), DR MAHOMMED ALI, SAID TODAY (SUNDAY).

DR ALI WAS APPEALING TO MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AGAINST THE DISEASES WITH THE APPROACH OF THE SUMMER.

HE POINTED OUT THAT FOOD-BORNE DISEASES SUCH AS CHOLERA, VIRAL HEPATITIS A, DYSENTERY, TYPHOID AND FOOD POISONING LIKE THE RECENT OCCURRENCE OF BIOTOXIN CASES, WERE COMMON IN THE SUMMER AS A RESULT OF EATING UNCLEAN OR DETERIORATED FOOD, OR DRINKING CONTAMINATED WATER.

"MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE STRONGLY ADVISED NOT TO PATRONISE ILLEGAL HAWKERS AND UNLICENSED FOOD PREMISES AS THEIR FOOD MAY BE UNCLEAN AND MAY POSE A SERIOUS RISK TO HEALTH, HE SAID.

DR ALI SAID: "DO NOT BUY CUT FRUIT AS OPEN CUT FRUIT CAN EASILY GET CONTAMINATED.

"WHEN CONSUMING SEAFOOD, IN PARTICULAR THE BIVALVE SHELLFISH, MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD AVOID EATING THEIR INTERNAL. ORGANS AND SHOULD NOT EAT TOO MUCH AT A TIME.

"WHEN THE TOXIC RED TIDE OCCURS, THEY SHOULD AVOID EATING RIVALVE SHELLFISH, DR ALI SAID.

HE ALSO ADVISED PEOPLE TRAVELLING TO TROPICAL COUNTRIES ΤΟ TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IN, CHOOSING THEIR FOODS AND DRINKS.

DR ALI CITED 10 POINTS FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO OBSERVE ΤΟ GUARD AGAINST GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISEASES:

MAINTAIN A CLEAN KITCHEN;

CLEAN THE CHOPPING BOARD AND KNIFE BEFORE USE, ESPECIALLY AFTER CUTTING RAW MEAT AND POULTRY;
