SALES OF FOODSTUFFS (OTHER THAN THOSE SOLD IN SUPERMARKETS) WENT UP MODERATELY, BY 4% IN VALUE AND 7% IN VOLUME.

THE

THE LARGER INCREASE IN VOLUME TERMS WAS DUE TO A FALL IN PRICES OF FOODSTUFFS CAUSED BY A HIGH BASE OF COMPARISON IN JANUARY 1993.

THIS WAS AFFECTED BY THE TIMING OF THE LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVAL, WHICH TOOK PLACE IN JANUARY LAST YEAR, BUT IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR.

ON THE OTHER HAND, SALES IN SUPERMARKETS DROPPED BY 4% IN VOLUME, DESPITE AN INCREASE OF 2% IN VALUE. SALES IN DEPARTMENT STORES REGISTERED A 6% DECREASE IN VOLUME BUT VIRTUALLY NO CHANGE IN VALUE. SALES OF FUELS DECREASED BY 6% IN VALUE AND 8% IN VOLUME.

COMPARED WITH DRCEMBER 1993, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON MAY BE AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN JANUARY 1994 INCREASED BY 2% IN VALUE AND 4% IN VOLUME.

THE VOLUME OF RETAIL SALES IS DERIVED FROM THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES AFTER ADJUSTING FOR PRICE CHANGES. THE RELEVANT COMPONENTS OF THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX ARE USED AS DEFLATORS.
