SALES OF CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR ROSE SHARPLY IN 1993 BY 31% VALUE AND 21% IN VOLUME; THOSE OF CONSUMER DURABLES OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES BY 17% IN VALUE AND 15% IN VOLUME; AND THOSE OF JEWELLERY AND WATCHES BY 11% IN VALUE AND 8% IN VOLUME.
MODERATE INCREASES WERE RECORDED FOR SALES OF SUPERMARKETS (BY 10% IN VALUE AND 3% IN VOLUME); SALES IN DEPARTMENT STORES (BY 10% IN VALUE AND 2% IN VOLUME); SALES OF FUELS (BY 8% IN VALUE AND 3% IN VOLUME); AND SALES OF OTHER FOODSTUFFS (BY 7% IN VALUE AND 1% IN VOLUME).
SALES OF MOTOR VEHICLES RECORDED A 1% INCREASE IN VALUE BUT A 7% DECREASE IN VOLUME.
COMPARING WITH
NOVEMBER 1993, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON MAY BE AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN DECEMBER 1993 INCREASED 18% IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.
THE VOLUME OF RETAIL SALES IS DERIVED FROM THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES AFTER ADJUSTING FOR PRICE CHANGES. THE RELEVANT COMPONENTS OF THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX ARE USED AS DEFLATORS.
