PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF RETAIL SALES SURVEY FOR DECEMBER 1993 RELEASED
THE VALUE OF TOTAL RETAIL SALES IN DECEMBER 1993, ESTIMATED AT BILLION, INCREASED 13% WHEN COMPARED WITH THE SAME MONTH LAST ACCORDING ΤΟ THE STATISTICS RELEASED TODAY (FRIDAY) BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.
$17.7 YEAR,
AFTER DISCOUNTING THE EFFECT OF PRICE CHANGES OVER THE PERIOD, TOTAL RETAIL SALES INCREASED 6% IN VOLUME TERMS.
FOR 1993 AS A WHOLE, THE INCREASE IN RETAIL SALES WAS VALUE AND 7% IN VOLUME.

THE INCREASE IN DECEMBER WAS MAINLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO CONSIDERABLE GROWTH IN SPENDING ON CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR, CONSUMER DURABLE GOODS OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES, AND SALES IN DEPARTMENT STORES.
SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS REGISTERED A SIGNIFICANT YEAR-ON-YEAR INCREASE IN DECEMBER, 26% IN VALUE AND 16% IN VOLUME.
SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLE GOODS OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES WENT UP MARKEDLY BY 21% IN VALUE AND 18% IN VOLUME, WHILE SALES IN DEPARTMENT STORES ROSE BY 15% AND 7% RESPECTIVELY.
BOTH SALES IN SUPERMARKETS AND SALES OF JEWELLERY AND WATCHES INCREASED 10% IN VALUE. IN VOLUME TERMS, THE INCREASES WERE 3% AND 2% RESPECTIVELY.

SALES OF FUELS WENT UP SLIGHTLY BY 3% IN VALUE AND 1% IN VOLUME.
ON THE OTHER HAND, SALES OF OTHER FOODSTUFFS SHOWED NO GROWTH VOLUME, DESPITE AN INCREASE IN VALUE BY

COMPARING 1993 WITH THE PRECEDING YEAR, TOTAL RETAIL SALES ROSE BY 13% IN VALUE AND 7% IN VOLUME. THE CORRESPONDING INCREASES 1992 WERE 18% AND 12% RESPECTIVELY, CONSUMER SPENDING IN 1993.
