THE SECOND OF THE GIANT CONCRETE TOWERS OF THE TSING MA BRIDGE HAS STARTED TO RISE UP FROM A MAN-MADE ISLAND OFF MA WAN,
USING A PROCESS CALLED SLIPFORMING, CONSTRUCTION OF THE MA WAN TOWER BEGAN ON AUGUST 28. SO FAR 19 METRES OF THE TOWER BASE HAS BEEN CAST.
SLIPFORMING IS A FASTER METHOD OF CONCRETE MORE CONVENTIONAL METHODS.
CONSTRUCTION THAN
CONSTRUCTION IS EXPECTED TO TAKE JUST FOUR MONTHS BY WHICH TIME THE TWO TOWER LEGS WILL REACH THEIR FULL HEIGHT OF 190 METRES. WITH THE ADDITION OF SADDLES AT THE TOP, THE HEIGHT OF THE TOWER WILL BE 206 METRES, THE SAME AS THE ONE ON TSING YI.
SLIPFORMING OF THE OTHER BRIDGE TOWER ON TSING YI STARTED IN EARLY JUNE AND WILL BE COMPLETED LATER THIS MONTH. THE TOWER HAS NOW REACHED A HEIGHT OF OVER 170 METRES.

THE BOTTOM SECTIONS OF THE HUGE CAISSONS WERE SEALED WITH SPECIAL CONCRETE FOR UNDERWATER USE AND THE ROCK BELOW THE WAS GROUTED.

WATER WAS THEN PUMPED OUT FROM THE CAISSONS, WHICH WERE WITH CONCRETE. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE CONSTRUCTION REINFORCED CONCRETE TOWER BASES WHICH OCCUPY THE UPPER LEVEL HOLLOW CAISSONS.
