STAGE I WOULD TAKE SEVEN MONTHS TO COMPLETE AND STAGE II WOULD TAKE ANOTHER EIGHT MONTHS TO COMPLETE. THE WHOLE PROJECT WAS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION BY DECEMBER NEXT YEAR.

MR TSAO SAID TO ENABLE THE WORK TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN SUCH A SHORT TIME, WORKING ROUND THE CLOCK MIGHT BE REQUIRED.

"HOWEVER, NIGHT WORK WILL BE CONFINED TO ACTIVITIES WHICH WILL NOT GENERATE EXCESSIVE NOISE," HE STRESSED.

"TEMPORARY NOISE BARRIER WILL BE ERECTED ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD," HE ADDED.

MR TSAO SAID IN BOTH STAGES, ONLY ONE TRAFFIC LANE AT A TIME WOULD BE CLOSED FOR RECONSTRUCTION.

DURING THE STAGE I WORK, THREE LANES WOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR TRAFFIC. THEREFORE, TIDAL FLOW HAD TO BE IMPLEMENTED TO COPE WITH THE PEAK-HOUR FLOW FOR KOWLOON BOUND AND NEW TERRITORIES BOUND TRAFFIC.

ACCORDINGLY, FROM 6 AM TO 4 PM, THERE WOULD BE TWO LANES FOR KOWLOON BOUND AND ONE FOR NEW TERRITORIES BOUND.

AND FROM 4 PM TO MIDNIGHT, THE MIDDLE LANE WOULD BE REVERTED SO - THAT TWO LANES WOULD BE FOR NEW TERRITORIES BOUND AND ONE FOR KOWLOON BOUND.

FROM MID-NIGHT TO 6 AM, ONLY ONE LANE WOULD BE OPENED FOR BACH DIRECTION FOR THE SAKE OF BETTER SAFETY.

IN BACH ARRANGEMENT

FOR STAGE II, TWO TRAFFIC LANES WOULD BE MAINTAINED DIRECTION THROUGHOUT THE RECONSTRUCTION WORK, TIDAL FLOW WOULD THEREFORE NOT BE REQUIRED. HOWEVER, THE BUS-ONLY HAVE TO BE SUSPENDED.

MR TSAO POINTED OUT THAT THE SPEED LIMIT HAD BEEN REDUCED FROM 70 KM PER HOUR TO 50 KM PER HOUR SINCE AUGUST 24.

AT THE SAME TIME, THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT WILL INTRODUCE VARIOUS TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEMES TO CATER FOR TRAFFIC FLOWS DURING THE RECONSTRUCTION PERIOD.

THE MAIN ALTERNATIVE ROUTES RECOMMENDED ARE ROUTE 5 SHING MUN TUNNELS AND ROUTE 6 TATE'S CAIRN TUNNEL.

TRAFFIC

LOCAL DIVERSION ROUTES IN SHA TIN WOULD BE SET UP ALONG HUNG MUI KUK ROAD, CHE KUNG MIU ROAD AND MEI TIN ROAD SO THAT SOME COULD BY-PASS THE WORKS AREA.
