CONTRACT SIGNED FOR MA ON SHAN ROAD AND DRAINAGE WORKS

THE TERRITORY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT HAS AWARDED A MILLION CONTRACT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD AND DRAINAGE WORKS IN MA ON SHAN.

THE CONTRACT, WHICH FORMS PART OF THE CONTINUING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR SHA TIN NEW TOWN, WAS SIGNED TODAY (WEDNESDAY} BY THE DIRECTOR OF TERRITORY DEVELOPMENT, MR CHOW CHE-KING, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CONTRACTOR, HOI SING CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

LIMITED AT A CEREMONY.

IT COMPRISES THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 0.7 KILOMETRE DUAL THREE-LANE CARRIAGEWAY AND A 0.2 KILOMETRE THREE-LANE SINGLE CARRIAGEWAY; LOCAL ROADS; FOOTPATHS AND CYCLE TRACKS; AS WELL AS GRADE SEPERATED INTERCHANGE.

OTHER WORKS ITEMS INCLUDE A FOOTBRIDGE, FIVE PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLE SUBWAYS, TWO SINGLE SPAN VEHICULAR BRIDGES, TWO BOX CULVERTS, RETAINING WALLS, BARTHWORKS, WATERMAINS, AND ASSOCIATED DRAINAGE AND SEWAGE WORKS.

THE WORKS WILL BEGIN NEXT MONTH FOR COMPLETION IN 30 MONTHS.

HEAVY FINES IMPOSED FOR UNREPORTED OVERTIME WORK

FACTORY OWNERS MUST COMPLY WITH LABOUR LEGISLATION AND REFRAIN FROM ENGAGING WOMEN IN WORK OUTSIDE THEIR NORMAL PERMITTED PERIOD OF

EMPLOYMENT.

THE LAI'S KNITWEAR MANUFACTURING LIMITED AND THE MAXTOR (HONG KONG) LIMITED WERE BOTH GIVEN THE MAXIMUM FINE OF $10,000 BY A KWUN TONG MAGISTRATE FOR ENGAGING 29 AND 52 WOMEN RESPECTIVELY IN UNREPORTED OVERTIME WORK.

ANOTHER TWO COMPANIES,

NAMELY THE ZIANG KONG MANUFACTURING COMPANY LIMITED AND THE GOLDEN HORSE GARMENT FACTORY LIMITED, WERE FINED $8,700 AND $8,000 RESPECTIVELY IN THE TSUEN WAN MAGISTRACY FOR EMPLOYING 29 AND 40 WOMEN IN UNREPORTED OVERTIME WORK.

LABOUR OFFICER (PROSECUTIONS), MRS KATHERINE TSANG, SAID TODAY (WEDNESDAY) THE OFFENCES WERE DETECTED BY LABOUR INSPECTORS DURING ROUTINE INSPECTION TO THESE FACTORIES.

IT IS AN OFFENCE UNDER THE WOMEN AND YOUNG PERSONS (INDUSTRY) REGULATIONS FOR AN EMPLOYER TO CHANGE THE PRESCRIBED WORKING HOURS WOMEN IN INDUSTRY OR TO ENGAGE THEM IN OVERTIME WORK, WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE LABOUR DEPARTMENT BEFOREHAND, MRS TSANG SAID.

THE LAW ALSO REQUIRES THE EMPLOYER TO DISPLAY IN A PLACE IN THE FACTORY A PRESCRIBED NOTICE SETTING OUT THE EMPLOYMENT, INTERVALS FOR MEALS OR REST, AND REST DAY WORKERS.
