PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF THE COUNTRY PARK SECTION OF ROUTE 3 BETWEEN AU TAU AND TSING YI IS IN HAND. IN PARALLEL, A CONSULTANCY STUDY ON THE BEST POSSIBLE OPTION TO FINANCE THIS PROJECT WILL BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF 1992.
THE SPOKESMAN ALSO REITERATED THAT THE OPTION TO BUILD A RAIL LINK WITH NORTHWEST NEW TERRITORIES IS STILL OPEN AND IS BEING EXAMINED WITH OTHER POSSIBLE OPTIONS IN THE RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT STUDY WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
THE PUBLIC WILL BE CONSULTED BEFORE THE ADMINISTRATION TAKES A VIEW ON THE ALIGNMENT OF THIS NEW RAILWAY, IF IT IS DECIDED THAT IT SHOULD GO AHEAD.
THE SPOKESMAN SAID ALL THESE PROJECTS AND MEASURES SHOWED GOVERNMENT'S DETERMINATION IN MEETING THE TRANSPORT NEEDS OF THE REGION IN BOTH SHORT AND LONG TERMS.
MOTORISTS URGED TO BE COURTEOUS AND SELF-DISCIPLINED
THE SECRETARY FOR TRANSPORT, MR MICHAEL LEUNG, TODAY (SUNDAY) URGED MOTORISTS TO EXERCISE COURTESY AND SELF-DISCIPLINE ΤΟ REDUCE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ON THE BUSY AND CROWDED ROADS IN HONG KONG.
SPEAKING AT THE CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE ROAD COURTESY CAMPAIGN ORGANISED BY THE ROTARY CLUB OF HONG KONG NORTHEAST, MR LEUNG SAID TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ARISING FROM CARELESSNESS AND IMPATIENCE BROUGHT NOT ONLY LOSS OF TIME AND PROPERTY BUT ALSO LOSS OF VALUABLE LIVES.
LAST YEAR 20,321 ROAD USERS WERE INJURED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS WHILE 315 WERE KILLED, REPRESENTING A DAILY AVERAGE OF 55 INJURIES
AND ONE DEATH.
"SUCH CASUALTY FIGURES ARE AS WORRYING AS THOSE BROUGHT ABOUT BY CANCER OR HEART DISEASE. WHILE DOCTORS ARE STILL TRYING HARD TO FIND A CURE FOR CANCER, ONE QUICK AND SIMPLE WAY TO REDUCE THE FATALITIES IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IS PATIENCE AND COURTESY ON THE PART OF MOTORISTS, MR LEUNG SAID.
MR LEUNG POINTED OUT THAT LAST YEAR, 4,147 ELDERLY PEDESTRIANS WERE INJURED AND 113 KILLED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS.
HE REMINDED MOTORISTS TO EXERCISE GREATER CARE AND PATIENCE WHEN ELDERLY PEDESTRIANS MADE THEIR CROSSINGS AS THEY WERE SLOWER IN MOVEMENTS AND MORE PRONE TO INACCURATE JUDGEMENT ON ROAD CONDITIONS.
