WITH THE OPENING OF ITS NEW PURPOSE-BUILT BUILDING LAST YEAR, THE COUNCIL COULD NOW UNIFY ALL ITS FACILITIES UNDER ONE ROOF.

MR BARMA SAID THE HKPC HAD RECENTLY TAKEN THE INITIATIVE то UNDERTAKE MULTI-CLIENT PROJECTS IN RESPONSE TO THE NEED FOR IMPROVED PRODUCT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT.

IN THE LIGHT OF INCREASING EMPHASIS ON THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS AS WELL AS THE ASSOCIATED PRODUCTION PROCESS, THE COUNCIL HAD ALSO EMBARKED ON A RANGE OF SERVICES AND FACILITIES TO HELP MANUFACTURERS OBTAIN ISO 9000 CERTIFICATION, HE ADDED.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE COUNCIL HAD BEEN ENTHUSIASTIC.

"THIS IS EVIDENCED BY THE FACT THAT THE COUNCIL HAD OVER 1,200 CONSULTANCY CLIENTS LAST YEAR.

"IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, THE COUNCIL ORGANISED OVER 600 TRAINING PROGRAMMES, IN WHICH OVER 14,000 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED," MR BARMA SAID.

POLLUTION OF POWER STATION GREATLY REDUCED

THE ENVIRONMENTAL

PROTECTION DEPARTMENT (EPD) WELCOMED THE DECISION OF THE CHINA LIGHT AND POWER CO LTD (CLP) TO INTRODUCE A PROGRAMME THAT WILL REDUCE NITROGEN OXIDES EMISSIONS FROM THE COAL-FIRED CASTLE PEAK POWER STATION IN TUEN MUN BY 50 PER CENT.

THE PROGRAMME IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED DURING THE WINTER

OF 1994-95 AT A TOTAL COST OF MORE THAN $150 MILLION.

UNDER THE PROGRAMME, CLP WILL RETROFIT ALL THE 'B' STATION BOILERS WITH AN ADVANCED TYPE OF COAL BURNER THAT WILL PRODUCE LOWER QUANTITIES OF NITROGEN OXIDES (NOx) GASES THAN CONVENTIONAL BURNERS. THEY ARE KNOWN AS "LOW-NOX BURNERS"

EARLY LAST YEAR, CLP BEGAN A PILOT PROGRAMME то ASSESS THE FEASIBILITY OF REDUCING THEIR EMISSIONS BY INSTALLING LOW-NOX BURNERS IN ONE OF THE BOILERS AT THE CASTLE PEAK 'B' STATION.

THE RESULTS HAVE SO FAR PROVED ENCOURAGING AND A NUMBER OF TECHNICAL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN OVERCOME.

THE EPD POINTED OUT THAT NITROGEN DIOXIDE IS A MAJOR AIR POLLUTANT WHICH IS PRODUCED MAINLY BY THE OXIDATION OF ATMOSPHERIC NITROGEN DURING THE COMBUSTION OF FOSSIL FUELS IN POWER STATIONS AND MOTOR VEHICLES.
