STUDENT WINS AWARD FOR READING 137 BOOKS A YEAR

SECONDARY 1 STUDENT TSE CHUN-TO OF WONG SHIV CHI SECONDARY SCHOOL IN TAI PO, WHO READ 137 BOOKS DURING THE 1991-92 SCHOOL YEAR, WAS THE MOST OUTSTANDING STUDENT AMONG THE 19 WINNERS UNDER THE

"EXTENSIVE ENGLISH READING" SCHEME.

OTHER STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENT ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDED CHAN TO-WO OF COGNITIO COLLEGE ON HONG KONG ISLAND WHO READ 92 BOOKS AND CHU HIU-MAN OF THE BAPTIST LUI MING CHOI SECONDARY SCHOOL IN SHA TIN, WHO READ 82.

THEY WERE AMONG THE 3,600 SECONDARY 1 STUDENTS FROM 19 SCHOOLS WHO TOOK PART IN THE SCHEME, A SENIOR LECTURER OF THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE IN EDUCATION, MRS VIVIENNE YU, SAID TODAY (TUESDAY) AT AN AWARD-PRESENTATION CEREMONY.

FIVE OF THE AWARDS WERE FOR THE BEST WRITTEN REPORTS AND FIVE FOR THE BEST DESIGNS IN BOOK COVER, BOOK MARK OR ILLUSTRATIONS.

MRS YU SAID TEACHERS HAD REPORTED THAT MANY OF THEIR STUDENTS WHO SELDOM OR HAVE NEVER READ ENGLISH BOOKS FOR PLEASURE HAD NOW PICKED UP A READING HABIT.

THE READING SCHEME, SHE ADDED, HAD ALSO GREATLY INCREASED THEIR EXPOSURE TO ENGLISH AND FILLED A GAP IN THE CURRICULUM BY PROVIDING A STUDENT-CENTRED METHOD OF LEARNING.

"MANY STUDENTS ARE NO LONGER SO AFRAID OF ENGLISH AND ARE MORE CONFIDENT OF THEIR ABILITY TO READ INDEPENDENTLY," SHE SAID.

ALSO SPEAKING AT THE CEREMONY, THE VICE-PRINCIPAL OF THE INSTITUTE, MRS CHRISTINA WONG, POINTED OUT THAT THE SCHEME WAS DIFFERENT FROM MANY OTHERS IN THAT IT WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE CURRICULUM.

"THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT PROVIDES RESOURCE PACKAGES IN THE FORM OF BOOKS AT EIGHT DIFFERENT READING LEVELS AND READING CARDS AS BRIDGING MATERIALS FOR SCHOOLS TAKING PART IN THE

SCHEME, MRS WONG SAID.

THE BOOKS RANGED FROM ABRIDGED VERSION ·OF CLASSICS SUCH AS "ANIMAL FARM" AND "AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS" TO BIOGRAPHIES SUCH AS "ELVIS PRESLEY KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL" AND "GHANDI: HIS LIFE WAS THE MESSAGE".

MRS WONG SAID 30 MORE SCHOOLS HAD BEEN ACCEPTED PARTICIPATION IN THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR AND THAT THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT PLANNED TO EVENTUALLY IMPLEMENT THE SCHEME BY PHASES IN ABOUT 200 SCHOOLS.
