MR KWONG SAID THE RATIOS BETWEEN EMPLOYEES COMPENSATION AND GDP ON THE ON THE ONE HAND, AND BETWEEN GROSS OPERATING SURPLUS AND GDP OTHER, WERE FAIRLY STABLE, WITH A SLIGHT TREND IN FAVOUR OF EMPLOYEES COMPENSATION.

IN VIEW OF A PROGRESSIVE TAXATION SYSTEM FOR SALARY EARNERS AND A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN SALARIES IN BOTH MONEY AND REAL TERMS IN RECENT YEARS, HE SAID IT WAS NOT SURPRISING THAT THE PROPORTION OF REVENUE CONTRIBUTED BY SALARIES TAX HAD INCREASED.

FOR THE PAST THREE FISCAL YEARS, THE RATIOS OF REVENUES FROM PROFITS TAX TO REVENUES FROM SALARIES TAX WERE 2.03:1, 1.62:1 AND 1.45:1 RESPECTIVELY.

THE RATIO OF EMPLOYEES COMPENSATION (LABOUR INCOME) TO THE HAS BEEN EDGING UP IN RECENT YEARS, FROM ABOUT 50% IN 1988 TO 51% 1989 AND FURTHER TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE 53% IN 1990.
