GOVT IN CONTACT WITH ADB ON PADS FINANCING

THE
GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN IN INFORMAL CONTACT WITH THE ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK SINCE EARLY THIS YEAR TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY
OF IT PARTICIPATING IN THE FINANCING OF SOME OF THE PORT AND AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY PROJECTS.
THIS WAS STATED BY THE SECRETARY FOR MONETARY AFFAIRS, MR DAVID NENDICK, IN A WRITTEN REPLY TO A QUESTION BY THE HON DAVID LI KWOK-PO IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
HE SAID THE INFORMAL SOUNDINGS WERE STILL IN PROGRESS.

MILDLY DISABLED CHILDREN ENCOURAGED TO ENROL IN ORDINARY SCHOOL
THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT PROVIDES SPECIAL CLASSES IN ORDINARY SCHOOLS AND A RANGE OF REMEDIAL AND ADVISORY SERVICES FOR MILDLY DISABLED CHILDREN OR THEIR PARENTS TO ENABLE THE CHILDREN TO RECEIVE EDUCATION IN SUCH SCHOOLS, THE SECRETARY FOR EDUCATION AND MANPOWER, MR JOHN CHAN, SAID TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
HE SAID THESE INCLUDE THE INTEGRATED KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMME FOR MILDLY DISABLED PRE-SCHOOLERS, RESOURCE CLASSES AND RESOURCE TEACHING CENTRES FOR CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES, PERIPATETIC ADVISORY SERVICES FOR HEARING IMPAIRED PUPILS, AND RESOURCE TEACHERS FOR BLIND INTEGRATORS.
"THESE SERVICES ARE REGULARLY REVIEWED AND IMPROVED TO ENHANCE EFFECTIVENESS AND TO ENSURE THAT THEY MEET THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS," HE ADDED.
REPLYING ΤΟ A QUESTION BY THE HON CHENG HỎI-CHUEN IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, MR CHAN SAID IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY THAT DISABLED CHILDREN SHOULD RECEIVE EDUCATION IN ORDINARY SCHOOLS, UNLESS THE DEGREE OF DISABILITY MAKES IT NECESSARY FOR A CHILD TO BE PLACED IN A SPECIAL SCHOOL.
BENEFIT THE
"BY AND LARGE, MILDLY DISABLED CHILDREN ARE ABLE ΤΟ FROM EDUCATION IN AN ORDINARY SCHOOL, GIVEN SOME EXTRA HELP IN FORM OF SPECIAL CLASSES AND OTHER SERVICE, HE ADDED.

TEACHERS IN ORDINARY SCHOOLS WHO ARE REQUIRED TO TEACH STUDENTS IN SPECIAL CLASSES MAY ATTEND THE TWO-YEAR PART-TIME IN-SERVICE COURSE OF TRAINING FOR TEACHERS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL OPERATED BY THE SIR ROBERT BLACK COLLEGE OF EDUCATION.

EDUCATION
IN ADDITION, THE SPECIAL EDUCATION SECTION OF THE DEPARTMENT ORGANISES SHORT INTRODUCTORY COURSES TWICE A YEAR FOR TEACHERS OF ORDINARY CLASSES TO FAMILIARISE THEM WITH THE GENERAL TECHNIQUES OF HANDLING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.
