HE WAS COMMISSIONED INTO THE ROYAL GREEN JACKETS AND HAS SERVED IN GERMANY, ADEN, HONG KONG, CYPRUS, OMAN AND BORNEO WITH OCCA- SIONAL PERIODS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
AFTER SERVICE AS A SQUADRON COMMANDER IN THE SPECIAL AIR SERVICE FROM 1971-73, HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS. HE SERVED IN HONG KONG BETWEEN 1974 AND 1976 AS THE PRINCIPAL STAFF OFFICER TO THE INFANTRY BRIGADE THEN BASED IN KOWLOON.

HE THEN WENT ON TO COMMAND 3RD BATTALION THE ROYAL GREEN JACKETS IN THE UK AND CYPRUS AND SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME AN OFFICER THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (OBE) AT THE END OF THIS COMMAND.
FROM 1980-82 GENERAL FOLEY WAS COMMANDANT OF THE JUNIOR DIVISION OF THE STAFF COLLEGE AT WARMINSTER AND FROM 1983-85 HE WAS DIRECTOR SPECIAL AIR SERVICE GROUP.
DURING 1986 HE WAS A STUDENT AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF DEFENCE STUDIES AND FROM 1987-89 HE WAS CHIEF OF MISSION OF THE BRITISH COMMANDERS' IN CHIEF MISSION TO THE SOVIET FORCES IN EAST GERMANY. 1989 HE BECAME DEPUTY CHIEF OF DEFENCE INTELLIGENCE.
MAJOR GENERAL FOLEY IS MARRIED WITH TWO DAUGHTERS. INTERESTS ARE ORNITHOLOGY, MILITARY HISTORY, PHOTOGRAPHY AND SHOOTING. HE HAS BEEN A LIVERYMAN OF THE SKINNERS COMPANY IN THE OF LONDON SINCE 1972.
