YAU MA TEI REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME ENTERS NEW STAGE

THE YAU MA TEI SIX STREETS REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME ENTERED A NEW STAGE TODAY (FRIDAY) WITH THE CLEARANCE OPERATION CARRIED OUT AT DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS EARMARKED FOR PHASE II OF THE SCHEME.

OF THE 1,212 HOUSEHOLDS AFFECTED BY THE CLEARANCE, 685 WERE ELIGIBLE FOR REHOUSING, AND MANY OF THEM HAVE MOVED INTO THE NEW FLATS BUILT UNDER THE PHASE I REDEVELOPMENT COMPLETED IN AUGUST THIS YEAR.

OF THE REMAINING 527 HOUSEHOLDS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REHOUSING, 479 VACATED THEIR PREMISES BEFORE THE CLEARANCE.

MANY OF THEM

MOVED INTO THE AFFECTED BUILDINGS AFTER THE INITIAL REGISTRATION OF OCCUPANTS WHEN THE AREA WAS EARMARKED FOR REDEVELOPMENT WHILE SOME OTHERS WERE FOUND ΤΟ BE EITHER PROPERTY OWNERS OR HAVING ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION.

HOWEVER, THEY WERE OFFERED EX-GRATIA ALLOWANCE TO ASSIST THEM IN THEIR REMOVAL.

LEASES OF MOST OF THE BUILDINGS IN THE AREA COVERED BY THE REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME EXPIRED IN 1971. EX-GRATIA ALLOWANCES WERE PAID TO FORMER OWNERS. THE OCCUPIERS HAD BEEN PAYING CROWN RENT SINCE 1980 WHEN THE GOVERNMENT TOOK OVER DIRECT MANAGEMENT OF THE BUILDINGS.

THEIR

MORE THAN 90 PER CENT OF THE OCCUPIERS HAVE VACATED PREMISES BEFORE THE CROWN LAND NOTICE EXPIRED TODAY. THE REST MOVED OUT THIS MORNING.

THE REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME IS ONE OF THE URBAN IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS AIMED AT IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE AREA AND ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES OF URBAN RENEWAL BY CONSTRUCTING DOMESTIC UNITS AND PROVIDING THE MUCH NEEDED COMMUNITY FACILITIES FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS.

IMPLEMENTED BY THE HONG KONG HOUSING SOCIETY, THE REDEVELOPMENT SCHEME COMPRISES FIVE DOMESTIC TOWER BLOCKS PROVIDING A TOTAL OF 896 SALE FLATS AND 669 RENTAL FLATS INCLUDING THOSE FOR THE ELDERLY.

ALSO INCLUDED IN THE SCHEME ARE 4,300 SQUARE METRES OF COMMERCIAL FLOOR SPACE AND 2,160 SQUARE METRES OF FLOOR SPACE DESIGNATED FOR SOCIAL WELFARE AND COMMUNITY FACILITY

USES, INCLUDING

A DAY CARE CENTRE FOR THE ELDERLY, CHILDREN AND YOUTH CENTRE, NURSERY, KINDERGARTEN AND DAY ACTIVITY CENTRE FOR THE MENTALLY HANDICAPPED.

IN ADDITION, SOME 8,380 SQUARE METRES OF PUBLIC OPEN SPACE AND 4,200 SQUARE METRES OF LANDSCAPED GARDEN FOR THE RESIDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED.

THE SCHEME IS BEING CONSTRUCTED IN TWO PHASES IN AN EFFORT TO REHOUSE THE ELIGIBLE OCCUPANTS AFFECTED BY THE REDEVELOPMENT IN THE DOMESTIC UNITS IN THE PHASE I BUILDINGS. THE NEW FLATS WERE MADE AVAILABLE TO THEM PRIOR TO THE CLEARANCE OPERATION.
