150 000 PUBLIC FLATS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

ÁT ANY ONE TIME, SOME 150 000 FLATS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR THE HONG KONG HOUSING AUTHORITY.

WORKING AT THIS PACE, AT WHICH SOME 50 000 FLATS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED IN EACH OF THE PAST FEW YEARS, THE AUTHORITY AIMS TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVE OF PROVIDING HOMES FOR ALL THE PEOPLE IN NEED TURN OF THE CENTURY.

FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING IN MARCH 1991, THE AUTHORITY $6.5 BILLION ON NEW CONSTRUCTION WORK, AND NEARLY $1 BILLION ON MAINTENANCE JOBS.

WITH THE LATEST OUTPUT OF FLATS, THE AUTHORITY NOW MANAGES RENTÁL ESTATES, 85 OWNERSHIP ESTATES, AND 79 TEMPORARY HOUSING COTTAGE AREAS WHICH, IN ALL, HOUSE SOME THREE MILLION PEOPLE.

AT THE SAME TIME, THE PRIVATE SECTOR EXPECTED TO PROVIDE ABOUT 270 000 FLATS.

SIR DAVID POINTS OUT THAT THE HOUSING AUTHORITY'S TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY EXTENDS TO ALL ASPECTS OF HOUSING IN THE CITY.
