DEPENDING ON
GOVERNMENT DRIVERS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK OVERTIME THE OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF INDIVIDUAL DEPARTMENTS, THE SECRETARY, THE HON SIR PIERS JACOBS, INFORMED THE LEGISLATIVE TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

GOVERNMENT AND 44 MOTOR DRIVERS FOR TOP SENIOR
AND ABOVE FOR THE LAST 12-MONTH OFFICIALS AT RANK DIRECTORATE D4 PERIOD (APRIL 1, 1990 MARCH 31, 1991) WAS HOWEVER AVAILABLE.

THEY WORKED 111,370 HOURS OF OVERTIME, COSTING $5,116,000. AVERAGE MONTHLY OVERTIME HOURS WORKED PER DRIVER WERE 95.44.
THE
NATURE OF THESE JOURNEYS. AND
THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY SAID IN GENERAL, THE OVERTIME ASSIGNMENTS CONSISTED OF HOME-TO-OFFICE RETURN ATTENDANCE AT OFFICIAL FUNCTIONS AND/OR MEETINGS.
PROVIDE A BREAKDOWN ON "IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO
THE PRECISE OF LOCATION OF THE OVERTIME ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT
RECORDS KEPT TIME, AND COSTS, BEING SPENT ON ANALYSING IN DETAIL THE BY INDIVIDUAL DEPARTMENTS," HE SAID.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY 2,900 DRIVER GRADE STAFF IN THE
SERVICE.
GOVERNMENT
WHO ARE NORMALLY EMPLOYED OF THESE, 780 ARE SPECIAL DRIVERS
SUCH AS STREET VEHICLES
REFUSE WASHERS, SPECIALISED FOR DRIVING
ARTICULATED VEHICLES AND COLLECTION VEHICLES, HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES, ROADSWEEPERS.
ARE DEPLOYED
THE REMAINING 2,120 MOTOR DRIVERS AND CHAUFFEURS TO DRIVE VEHICLES RANGING FROM SMALL SALOON CARS TO COACHES.
