INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION/JAPAN EAST ASIAN TRIPARTITE SEMINAR ON SOUND LABOUR RELATIONS" MR CHEN NOTED THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD ENACTED 134 ITEMS OF LABOUT LEGISLATION AFTER CONSULTING THE LAB IN THE PAST 10 YEARS.

"LAST YEAR, THE LAB LABOUR RELATIONS PROMOTION SUB-COMMITTEE JOINTLY ORGANISED WITH THE LABOUR DEPARTMENT A LARGE-SCALE LABOUR RELATIONS CONFERENCE WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY MORE THAN 700 EMPLOYERS, HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGERS, MEMBERS OF PROFESSIONAL BODIES, TRADE UNION REPRESENTATIVES AND ACADEMICS, HE SAID.

JUDGING FROM THE RESPONSE FROM BOTH THE PARTICIPANTS AND THE GUEST SPEAKERS, IT IS EVIDENT THAT BOTH EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES SHARE A COMMON CONCERN TO BRING ABOUT LASTING INDUSTRIAL HARMONY FIRMLY BASED ON MUTUAL TRUST AND RESPECT.

I AM PLEASED TO ADD HERE THAT THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT'S CONTINUED EFFORT TO IMPROVE LABOUR RELATIONS THROUGH TRIPARTITE CO-OPERATION IS NOW COMPLEMENTED BY THE INITIATIVES TAKEN BY THE INDUSTRIES THEMSELVES, HE ADDED.

MR CHEN POINTED OUT THAT INDUSTRY-BASED TRIPARTITE DIALOGUE WAS HELD TO DISCUSS WAYS OF IMPROVING LABOUR-MANAGEMENT RELATIONS, WITH TRIPARTITE LABOUR RELATIONS COMMITTEES SET UP IN THE CATERING AND CONSTRUCTION TRADES IN THE PAST TWO YEARS.
