KWEI SAID PHASE II
ON THE NEW TERRITORIES CIRCULAR ROAD, MR BETWEEN PAK SHEK AU AND MAI PO WAS NEARING COMPLETION.
PHASES III AND IV BETWEEN MAI PO AND AU TAU WOULD BE COMPLETED IN EARLY 1991 AND THE LAST PHASE OF THE WIDENING OF THE SECTION BETWEEN FAN KAM ROAD AND MAI PO WOULD BE COMPLETED IN EARLY 1992.
THE EAST BRIDGE OF THE LOK MA CHAU CROSSING WOULD BE READY FOR OPENING AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
THE UPGRADING AND DUALLING OF CONNAUGHT ROAD ON HONG KONG 15LAND WOULD BE COMPLETED IN MARCH NEXT YEAR, WHILE THE KING'S ROAD RECONSTRUCTION WAS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION IN MID-1992.
ON THE TWO PRIVATISED ROAD TUNNEL PROJECTS, MR KWEI SAID THE EASTERN HARBOUR CROSSING WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC IN SEPTEMBER AND GOOD PROGRESS HAD BEEN ACHIEVED ON THE TATE'S CAIRN TUNNEL WITH THE TUNNEL BREAKTHROUGH TAKING PLACE ALSO IN SEPTEMBER.
HE SAID SEVERAL MAJOR PROJECTS WERE IN AN ADVANCED STAGE OF PLANNING AND WERE SCHEDULED FOR A START IN THE NEXT FINANCIAL YEAR.
THESE INCLUDED THE YUEN LONG BYPASS, AND THE TUEN MUN-YUEN BE LONG EASTERN CORRIDOR, BOTH DUAL TWO-LANE CARRIAGEWAYS WHICH WOULD COMPLETED BY EARLY 1993 TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO NORTHWEST NEW TERRITORIES.
THE HILLSIDE ESCALATOR PROJECT ON HONG KONG ISLAND, A WALKWAY WITH ESCALATORS LINKING CENTRAL AND CONDUIT ROAD MID-LEVELS WAS PLANNED FOR COMPLETION BY MID-1992.
COVERED IN THE
THE IMPROVEMENT WORKS ON THE SECTION OF KENNEDY ROAD BETWEEN MONMOUTH TERRACE AND ITS JUNCTION WITH MACDONNELL ROAD WOULD BE COMPLETED IN 1993.
MR KWEI ADDED THAT A NUMBER OF ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS KOWLOON WERE ALSO BEING PLANNED.

HE SAID THE DEPARTMENT WAS PROCEEDING WITH DETAILED STUDIES VARIOUS MAJOR PROJECTS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE AT CHEK LAP KOK AND PORT FACILITIES IN EAST LANTAU.

THE SECOND COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPORT STUDY NEED TO UPGRADE KAST-WEST ROUTES IN KOWLOON, HE SAID.
IDENTIFIED THE
PLANNING HAD STARTED ON THE UPGRADING OF CHING CHEUNG ROAD AND AND IMPROVEMENTS TO BOUNDARY STREET AND PRINCE
LUNG CHEUNG ROAD EDWARD ROAD.
"THIS HAS BECOME MORE IMPORTANT WITH THE DECISION TO RELOCATE THE AIRPORT." MR KWEI SAID.
TURNING TO ROAD MAINTENANCE, MR KWEI SAID THE DEPARTMENT MAINTAINED SOME 3,500 LANE KILOMETRES OF ROADS INCLUDING ROAD TUNNELS, FLYOVERS AND BRIDGES.
