WORK OF FISH CULTURE ASSOCIATION PRAISED

THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (FISHERIES) OF THE FISHERIES DEPARTMENT. DR CHRISTOPHER LEE. SAID THE ASSOCIATION HAD HELPED FOSTER CO-OPERATION AMONG MARICULTURISTS IN THE YUNG SHUE AU AREA. RESULTING IN IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE AS WELL AS BETTER COMPLIANCE WITH THE MARINE FISH CULTURE ORDINANCE.

HE WAS SPEAKING AT A CEREMONY TO MARK THE INAUGURATION OF THE SECOND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION.

"THE ASSOCIATION HAS ALSO ENCOURAGED THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AND EXPERIENCE AMONG MARICULTURISTS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE FISH CULTURE TECHNIQUES." HE SAID.

DR LEE ALSO THANKED THE ASSOCIATION FOR ITS CONTINUING CO-OPERATION IN THE DEPARTMENT'S OXYGEN BUDGET MODELLING FOR FISH CULTURE ZONES.

THE PROJECT USES DATA ON VARIOUS FACTORS AFFECTING CONTENT IN SEA WATER. SUCH AS TIDAL CURRENT. SUNSHINE. RAINFALL. AND OTHER FACTORS TO DEVELOP A COMPUTER MODEL TO PROVIDE FORECASTS ON LIKELIHOOD OF OXYGEN DEPLETIONS WHICH MAY LEAD TO FISH KILLS. ALSO TO DETERMINE THE MAXIMUM FISH STOCK CARRYING CAPACITY OF FISH CULTURE ZONE.

AND THE

THE PROJECT WAS STARTED IN MID-1986 AND IS BEING CARRIED AT THE YUNG SHUE AU FISH CULTURE ZONE AT THREE FATHOMS COVE.

THE YUNG SHUE AU MARINE FISH CULTURE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION WAS ESTABLISHED A YEAR AGO AND CURRENTLY HAS 75 MEMBERS. ALSO PRESENT AT THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY THIS EVENING WAS THE ASSOCIATION'S HONORARY PRESIDENT. MR ANDREW WONG.
