CASUALTY

THIS WAS STATED BY THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR (TRAFFIC), MR PEDRO CHING KWOK-HOO AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON TRAFFIC ACCIDENT AND STATISTICS FOR THE THIRD QUARTER THIS YEAR.

HE POINTED OUT THAT A HIGH PROPORTION OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS INVOLVED PEDESTRIANS. THE NUMBER OF PEDESTRIANS KILLED HAD RISEN то 55. REPRESENTING 63.6 PER CENT OF TOTAL FATALITIES.

"OF THESE. 38 FATALITIES ARE ELDERLY PEOPLE. MR CHING SAID. HE URGED MOTORISTS TO GIVE GREATER CONSIDERATION TO OLDER PEOPLE.

REFERRING TO THE COMPULSORY WEARING OF SEAT BELT BY DRIVERS AND FRONT SEAT PASSENGERS IN TAXIS AND PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES. NEWLY INTRODUCED AT THE BEGINNING OF JULY THIS YEAR. MR. CHING REVEALED THAT THERE WAS A REDUCTION OF 20 PER CENT IN THE NUMBER OF FRONT SEAT CASUALTIES IN TAXIS IN THE FIRST THREE MONTHS PERIOD.

HOWEVER, IN THE CASE OF PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES THERE HAD BEEN A SLIGHT RISE IN FRONT SEAT CASUALTIES.

'AS THE CASUALTY SAMPLE ON WHICH THE ANALYSIS FOR PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES WAS BASED IS TOO SMALL TO FORM A CONCLUSION. IT WILL PROBABLY TAKE A YEAR'S SAMPLE BEFORE AN ACCURATE ASSESSMENT CAN BE MADE, " EXPLAINED.

CONCERNING VEHICULAR INVOLVEMENT IN ACCIDENTS, STATISTICS SHOWED THAT GOODS VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED IN 1981 CASES OR 31 PER CENT OF THE WHOLE. PRIVATE CARS WERE INVOLVED IN 24.6 PER CENT OF ALL ACCIDENTS AND THE PRIVATE CAR FLEET CONSISTS OF 51.9 PER CENT OF ALL VEHICLES REGISTERED.

FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT INVOLVEMENT. URBAN TAXIS WERE INVOLVED 990 ACCIDENTS WHICH REPRESENTS 55.8 PER CENT OF OVERALL PUBLIC TRANSPORT INVOLVEMENT.
