THE VALUE OF TOTAL RETAIL SALES $7,957 MILLION, DECREASED BY 4 PER CENT WHEN COMPARED WITH
ACCORDING BY 10 PER CENT, WHILST THEIR VOLUME DECREASED PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF A SURVEY RELEASED TODAY (FRIDAY) BY THE AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.
AS WELL
THIS REFLECTS A SLACKENING IN LOCAL CONSUMER SPENDING
COMING TO HONG AS A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF TOURISTS KONG IN JUNE. THE EVENTS IN CHINA IN EARLY JUNE COULD HAVE MUCH TO WITH THE LATTER FACTOR.
COMPARED WITH JUNE 1988, RETAIL SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, DRINKS AND TOBACCO WENT UP BY 14 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 2 PER VOLUME. FUELS WENT UP BY 9 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND 2 PER SALES VOLUME.
