TRAINING

SHE SAID THE DEPARTMENT HAD BEEN HOLDING SEMINARS AND TRAINING COURSES ON MARICULTURE TECHNIQUES AND MANAGEMENT AND THESE FACILITIES WERE WELCOMED BY FISH FARMERS.

THE LEAFLET JUST PRODUCED WAS MEANT TO COMPLEMENT THE SERVICES AND TO MAKE THE INFORMATION MORE HANDY AND READILY WHEN NEEDED.

ADVISORY AVAILABLE

"CULTURISTS SHOULD TRY THEIR BEST TO KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT CLEAN BY DISPOSING RUBBISH PROPERLY AT THE LITTER COLLECTION POINTS NEAREST TO THEIR FISH CULTURE ZONES, DR WONG SAID.

"THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT ANY DEAD FISH FOUND IN THE WATERS BE REMOVED TO PREVENT BACTERIAL GROWTH AND THE SPREADING OF FISH DISEASE."

SHE SAID NETS AND CAGES SHOULD BE CLEANED FREQUENTLY BECAUSE ACCUMULATION OF FOULERS ON THEM WOULD AFFECT WATER CIRCULATION AND MIGHT CAUSE OXYGEN DEPLETION AND DAMAGES TO THE FISH.

"THEY SHOULD ALSO ENSURE THAT CLEANING IS CONDUCTED OUTSIDE THE FISH CULTURE ZONE AT PLACES WHERE WATER IS DEEP AND WITH FAST CURRENTS," SHE ADDED.

DR WONG ALSO ADVISED CULTURISTS TO AVOID OVERFEEDING THEIR FISH BECAUSE EXCESSIVE FEED DEPOSITED AT THE SEA BOTTOM WOULD CAUSE BACTERIAL BLOOM.

CULTURISTS WERE ALSO ADVISED TO INSTRUMENTS AND SYSTEM TO PREDICT AND COPE CONDITIONS AS OXYGEN DEPLETION AND RED TIDES.

DR WONG SAID OXYGEN

FOLLOWING CIRCUMSTANCES: HOT,

INSTALL APPROPRIATE WITH SUCH ADVERSE

DEPLETION OFTEN OCCURRED UNDER THE STUFFY WEATHER; CLOUDY AND OVERCAST BEFORE THUNDERSTORM; STAGNANT TIDE AND WHEN WATER APPEARED WHITISH WITH THE SURFACING OF A LOT OF THE BENTHIC FAUNA.

THE FISH

SHE SAID CULTURISTS SHOULD IMMMEDIATELY STOP FEEDING AND MONITOR THE OXYGEN LEVEL IN THE WATER WITHIN CAGES AND THEY SHOULD AERATE THE WATER IN THE CAGES WHENEVER NECESSARY.

DR WONG SAID IN THE EVENT OF A RED TIDE, THE WATER PINKISH OR BROWNISH. FISH FARMERS SHOULD REPORT SUCH OCCURRENCES IMMEDIATELY TO THE AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES DEPARTMENT BY TELEPHONE AND ALERT THEIR FELLOW CULTURISTS IN THEIR FISH CULTURE ZONES SO THAT THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES COULD BE MADE TO PREVENT ANY FISH KILL.
