A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THAT AT PRESENT, THE TWO-LANE PO ROAD WAS THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE LION ROCK TUNNEL FOR TRAFFIC BETWEEN SHA TIN AND KOWLOON.

WORKS WERE UNDERWAY TO IMPROVE SOME OF THE BENDS AND PROVIDE AN EXTRA LANE FOR ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF ITS LENGTH BETWEEN THE TAI WO PING INTERCHANGE IN KOWLOON AND TAI WAI IN SHA TIN.

WOULD PROVIDE

WIDENING THE ROAD ΤΟ THREE LANES THROUGHOUT EXTRA CAPACITY FOR THE TRAFFIC BETWEEN KOWLOON AND SHA TIN AND THUS HELP RELIEVE THE SERIOUS CONGESTION AT THE LION ROCK TUNNEL.

IT WOULD ALSO BRING SOME OF THE EXTRA TRAFFIC INTO KOWLOON AT A POINT OTHER THAN WATERLOO ROAD, AND THEREFORE LESSEN THE CHANCES OF A SERIOUS INCREASE IN CONGESTION THERE.

THE WIDENING OF THIS ROAD WOULD ALSO PROVIDE A PERMANENT IMPROVEMENT. IT WOULD BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF 1989, AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS ROUTE 5 CORRIDOR BETWEEN SHA TIN AND TSUEN WAN. TOGETHER, THESE TWO ROUTES WOULD GREATLY IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW BETWEEN NORTHEAST NEW TERRITORIES AND THE KWAI CHUNG/TSUEN WAN AREA.

FURTHERMORE, CONSTRUCTION WORKS WERE UNDERWAY TO IMPROVE SOME OF THE ROAD'S BENDS AND PROVIDE A CLIMBING LANE AT SELECTED SECTIONS BETWEEN THE TAI WO PING INTERCHANGE IN KOWLOON AND TAI WAI IN SHA TIN.

PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF THE ADDITIONAL LANE IS ABOUT $70 MILLION.

AS PART OF THE PROJECT, SOME IMPROVEMENTS TO TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AT THE TAI WO PING INTERCHANGE, THE TAI WAI CONNECTION AND ALONG WATERLOO ROAD WOULD BE NECESSARY AS A RESULT OF THE INCREASED FLOW OF TRAFFIC TO KOWLOON.

OTHER

THE SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE CONSULTANCY STUDY OF POSSIBLE MEASURES TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS BETWEEN SHA TIN AND KOWLOON WOULD CONTINUE.

A REPORT ON THE CONSULTANCY STUDY, INCLUDING THE BEACON TUNNEL PROPOSAL, AND ON THE ONE-WAY TOLL EXPERIMENT AT THE LION TUNNEL WOULD BE SUBMITTED TO THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL IN JANUARY YEAR, HE SAID.
