BETTER FIRE DEFENCE FOR KOWLOON EAST

THE SHUN LEE FIRE STATION PROVIDES FIRST LINE RESPONSE TO EMERGENCY INCIDENTS IN THE AREA AND SPEEDY ASSISTANCE TO MAJOR INCIDENTS IN SAI KUNG AND NGAU CHI WAN AREAS, CHIEF FIRE OFFICER, MR LAM CHEK-YUEN, SAID TODAY (FRIDAY) AT THE STATION'S OPENING CEREMONY.
THE STATION, HE SAID, WAS COMPLETED IN 1986 UNDER THE PROGRAMME PLAN TO MEET THE TARGET OF SIX MINUTES RESPONSE TIME.
THE NEED TO ENHANCE FIRE DEFENCE IN THE NORTH-EASTERN SECTION OF THE NEW KOWLOON AREA WAS IDENTIFIED BY THE PLANNERS IN THE FIRE SERVICES AS EARLY AS 1976, HE ADDED.
+THE COMMISSIONING OF THIS FIRE STATION HAS BEEN VERY TIMELY AS THE POPULATION IN KOWLOON EAST HAS SOARED TO OVER ONE MILLION IN RECENT YEARS.
+TO MATCH THE RAPID DEVELOPMENT WE HAVE, OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, COMMISSIONED NEW FIRE STATIONS AT WONG TAI SIN, SAI KUNG, KOWLOON BAY AND SHUN LEE.
+WITH EFFECT FROM JANUARY 1, 1987 KOWLOON EAST DIVISION OF THE KOWLOON FIRE COMMAND WAS SPLIT INTO TWO DIVISIONS, EAST KOWLOON DIVISION AND CENTRAL KOWLOON DIVISION, MR LAM SAID.
NAMELY
SHUN LEE FIRE STATION FALLS WITHIN THE NEW CENTRAL KOWLOON DIVISION WHICH HAS A BOUNDARY COVERING SOME 4 900 HECTARES WITH RISKS RANGING FROM SQUATTER AREAS ON HILL-SIDES AND ACCESS PROBLEM TO HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS.
NGAU TAU KOK, KOWLOON BAY PLAN AMENDED

THE SETTING UP OF A TRADE MART+ FOR DISPLAY OF MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS AND THE PROMOTION OF WHOLESALE TRADE HAS BEEN INCLUDED IN AMENDMENTS TO THE NGAU TAU KOK AND KOWLOON BAY OUTLINE ZONING PLAN.
EXPLAINING THE AMENDMENTS, WHICH WERE GAZETTED TODAY (FRIDAY), A SPOKESMAN FOR THE TOWN PLANNING BOARD SAID MOST OF THE AREA BOUND BY KAI CHEUNG ROAD, KAI FUK ROAD AND WANG CHIN STREET, HAD BEEN REZONED FROM +OPEN SPACE+ AND +GOVERNMENT-INSTITUTION- COMMUNITY+ (GIC) TO +OTHER SPECIFIED USES+ ANNOTATED +TRADE MART OR INDUSTRIAL-GODOWN USE+ TO FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MART.
OTHER AMENDMENTS INCLUDED THE REZONING OF TWO INDUSTRIAL SITES AT THE JUNCTION OF WANG KWUN ROAD AND SHEUNG YUET ROAD TO OPEN SPACE+ TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LOSS OF SUCH SPACE BECAUSE OF THE PROPOSED TRADE MART.
