CIVIC LESSONS AT A HOLIDAY CAMP

ABOUT 120 YOUNGSTERS IN THE SAI KUNG DISTRICT TOOK PART TODAY (SATURDAY) IN THE YOUTH CIVIC DAY AT THE PO LEUNG KUK PAK TAM CHUNG HOLIDAY CAMP.
JOINTLY ORGANISED BY THE SAI KUNG DISTRICT CIVIC EDUCATION PROMOTION COMMITTEE AND THE DISTRICT OFFICE, THE CIVIC DAY WAS ONE OF THE MAJOR PROGRAMMES OF THE DISTRICT'S CIVIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN.
THE PROGRAMMES STARTED AT 9.30 AM WITH A SEMINAR CONDUCTED BY LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MEMBER, MRS ROSANNA TAM, AND THE CO-ORDINATOR OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ADVICE ACTION COUNCIL, MR MAK
HOI-WAH.
THEY SPOKE ABOUT THE RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF YOUTHS IN THE SOCIETY AND THEIR ROLE IN ASSISTING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.
AFTER THE SEMINAR, PARTICIPANTS WERE DIVIDED INTO TEN GROUPS TO DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS OF CIVIC EDUCATION IN HONG KONG. IN EACH GROUP, A LEADER AND A SECRETARY WERE CHOSEN TO START DISCUSSIONS WHILE TEACHERS WERE ALSO PRESENT TO GIVE ADVICE AND GUIDANCE.
PARTICIPANTS WERE THEN TESTED IN A QUIZ ON THEIR COMMON SENSE AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CIVIC EDUCATION. THEY LATER JOINED IN RECREATIONAL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES ARRANGED BY THE ORGANISERS.
THEY ALSO SPENT AN AFTERNOON AT THE SAI KUNG GOVERNMENT FARM AT TSIU HANG WHERE THEY WERE TOLD ABOUT VEGETATION, THE WAYS OF CUTTING GRASS AND APPLYING FERTILIZERS TO PLANTS,
MOST PARTICIPANTS, AGED BETWEEN 15 TO 21, WERE SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WHILE SOME WERE WORKERS RECOMMENDED BY VOLUNTARY AGENCIES IN THE DISTRICT.

THE REGIONAL SECRETARY FOR HONG KONG AND KOWLOON, MR T. H. CHAU, WILL GO ON ONE MONTH'S LEAVE FROM MARCH 27, AND HIS POST WILL BE TEMPORARILY FILLED BY THE DEPUTY REGIONAL SECRETARY FOR THE NEW TERRITORIES, MR PETER NG.
ISLANDS DISTRICT OFFICER, MR MICHAEL WU, WILL ASSUME THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF DRS (NT). AND IN ADDITION HE WILL ALSO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT SECRETARY (DEVELOPMENT) DURING THIS PERIOD, WHEN THE CURRENT INCUMBENT MR JOHN TELFORD, BECOMES THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR (OPERATIONS) OF THE HOUSING DEPARTMENT WITH EFFECT FROM APRIL 1.
