+ IN ORDER TO ASSIST SCHOOLS THAT DECIDE TO CHANGE THEIR MEDIA OF INSTRUCTION, THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE IN EDUCATION WILL OFFER, FROM FEBRUARY 1987, COURSES FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN THE USE OF CHINESE FOR THE TEACHING OF SUBJECTS OTHER THAN ENGLISH, + HE SAID.
+ IN-SERVICE TRAINING OF TEACHERS TO BE PROFICIENT IN PUTONGHUA AND TO BE COMPETENT IN TEACHING THE SUBJECT IS EXPANDING.+,
THE INSTITUTE WAS NOW RUNNING, EACH SUMMER, SPECIAL SHORT COURSES IN LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT. AND TEACHING METHODS. IN ADDITION TO ITS REGULAR FULL-TIME CHINESE REFRESHER COURSES, WHICH INCLUDE D COMPULSORY FUNDAMENTAL STUDIES IN PUTONGHUA,
THERE WERE TWO PROJECTS WHICH BORE UPON CONTINUING EDUCATION
FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS, HE SAID.
THE FIRST WAS A PILOT RESEARCH AND TEACHER EDUCATION PROJECT TO ENCOURAGE EXTENSIVE READING IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL,
AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY HAD BEEN LAUNCHED IN NINE SCHOOLS, AND SEMINARS FOR TEACHERS FROM THESE SCHOOLS HAD BEEN HELD AT THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE IN EDUCATION TO BRIEF THEM ON THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY AND ON ITS METHODOLOGY.
+ I UNDERSTAND THAT RIGOROUS EVALUATION PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN BUILT INTO THE PROJECT DESIGN AND THAT THE PROGRESS MADE BY PUPILS IN THE PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS IS BEING MONITORED, HE SAID.
THE SECOND PROJECT INCLUDED AN INTENSIVE THREE-WEEK RESIDENTIAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY COURSE IN HONG KONG TO BE CONDUCTED BY THE INSTITUTE AND AN IMMERSION PROGRAMME IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
+ABOUT 100 TEACHERS WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE COURSES IN 1987 AND, IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS. THE NUMBERS WILL INCREASE TO APPROXIMATELY 300 PER YEAR AND WILL INCLUDE GRADUATE AS WELL AS NON-GRADUATE SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF ENGLISH,+ SIR DAVID SAID.
