SCHOOL HEADS BRIEFED ON GUIDELINES

THE LATEST SET OF GUIDELINES ON GUIDANCE WORK IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS HAS BEEN SPECIALLY PREPARED IN RESPONSE TO INCREASING DEMAND THAT SCHOOLS SHOULD PLAY A MORE POSITIVE PASTORAL ROLE AND GIVE MORE SPECIFIC AND IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE TO PUPILS IN SHAPING THEIR LIVES, PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH PROBLEMS, THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, MR MICHAEL LEUNG, SAID TODAY (SATURDAY).
ADDRESSING A GATHERING OF 270 SECONDARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AT A SEMINAR ON GUIDANCE WORK AT QUEEN ELIZABETH SCHOOL, MR LEUNG SAID THE PURPOSE WAS TO BRIEF THEM ON THE AIMS AND CONTENTS OF THE SUGGESTED GUIDE ON GUIDANCE WORK. CLARIFY ANY POINTS OF DOUBT AND GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THE GUIDELINES AND MAKE SUGGESTIONS.
NOTING THAT +GUIDANCE WORK IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS+ HAD BEEN CHOSEN AS THE THEME OF THE SEMINAR, MR LEUNG SAID EDUCATORS AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE WERE CONCERNED WITH PUPILS' DEVELOPMENTAL, EDUCATIONAL AND PERSONAL PROBLEMS.
+ THE ENCHANCEMENT OF PUPILS' PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IS NOT ONLY AN IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE, IT IS ALSO THE MAIN THRUST OF RECENT MEASURES TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION,+ HE SAID.
MR LEUNG SAID MORE SERVICES AND RESOURCES MATERIALS WERE PROVIDED TO SCHOOLS DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS. THIS WOULD COMPLEMENT OR BROADEN THE CURRICULUM AND MADE THE SECONDARY EDUCATION MORE RELEVANT TO THE PUPILS.
+GUIDELINES ON MORAL EDUCATION, ON CIVIC EDUCATION, ON SEX EDUCATION AND, MORE RECENTLY, ON PUPIL GUIDANCE HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED FOR TEACHERS REFERENCE SO THAT THEY WILL HAVE A READY SOURCE OF MATERIALS AND SUGGESTED PROGRAMMES.+
NOTING THAT NO NEW INITIATIVES IN SCHOOLS COULD SUCCEED WITHOUT THE FULL AND UNFAILING SUPPORT FROM THE SCHOOL PRINCIPALS, MR LEUNG SAID THEIR CO-OPERATION COULD ONLY BE SOLICITED IF THEY WERE FULLY BRIEFED ON THE NEW INITIATIVE, UNDERSTOOD TIS PURPOSES AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, WERE CONVINCED OF ITS VALUE.
A LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MEMBER, MR YEUNG PO-KWAN, SAID THERE WAS A STRONG NEED FOR A PUPIL GUIDANCE SERVICE BECAUSE ADOLESCENTS TODAY WERE OFTEN CONFRONTED WITH DIFFICULTIES RESULTING FROM HEAVY SCHOOL WORK, EXAMINATION STRESS, AND RAPID AND COMPLEX CHANGES IN SOCIETY,
