WORK UNDER THIS PHASE INCLUDES IMPROVING THE ROAD ALIGNMENT, ADDING A CLIMBING LANE FOR SHA TIN-BOUND TRAFFIC, IMPROVING ROAD JUNCTION ARRANGEMENTS AT CALDECOTT ROAD AND GOLDEN HILL ROAD, AND PROVIDING CAR PARKING AREAS AND A FOOTWAY ON ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD THROUGHOUT THE SECTION.
IN ADDITION, A FOOTBRIDGE WILL BE BUILT ACROSS TAI PO ROAD NEAR PIPER'S HILL.
WORK IS TO START IN DECEMBER AND TAKE 21 MONTHS TO COMPLETE.
THE HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT IS INVITING TENDERS FOR THE PROJECT BY OCTOBER 31.
IT IS EXPECTED THAT AFTER THESE IMPROVEMENTS THE CAPACITY OF THIS SECTION OF TAI PO ROAD WILL BE INCREASED BY ABOUT 30 PER CENT, PROVIDING SOME RELIEF TO TRAFFIC NOW USING LION ROCK TUNNEL ROAD.
PHASE 1 OF THE IMPROVEMENT WORKS, WHICH COVERS THE TWO- KILOMETRE-LONG SECTION BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT EXPLOSIVES DEPOT AND LOWER SHING MUN RIVER, STARTED IN APRIL AND IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN EARLY 1988.
WORK UNDER THIS PHASE INCLUDES WIDENING THE ROAD TO A MINIMUM OF 7.3 METRES WHICH IS THE STANDARD WIDTH FOR A TWO-LANE ROAD, AND PROVIDING A CLIMBING LANE, FOOTPATHS, CAR PARKING AREAS,
THERE WILL ALSO BE EXTENSIVE BUS LAY-BYS AND PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. LANDSCAPING.
FERRY PIER AT LANTAU TO BE EXTENDED

THE GOVERNMENT PROPOSES TO EXTEND THE FERRY PIER AT TA SHUI WAN, NORTHEAST LANTAU, TO FACILITATE THE MOORING OF KAITOS OPERATING BETWEEN TSING LUNG TAU AND LUK KENG.
ABOUT 20 SQUARE METRES OF FORESHORE AND SEABED AT TA SHUI WAN. ADJACENT TO NGONG SHUEN AU, WILL BE AFFECTED.
THE EXISTING FERRY PIER WAS BUILT OVER 20 YEARS AGO. IT IS 17.4 METRES LONG AND WILL BE EXTENDED BY 10 METRES SO THAT KAITOS CAN MOOR EVEN DURING LOW TIDES.
WORK IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER AND BE COMPLETED
IN ABOUT THREE MONTHS.
OBJECTIONS TO THE PROPOSED WORKS SHOULD BE SENT IN WRITING TO THE DIRECTOR OF BUILDINGS AND LANDS BY DECEMBER 2.
