THE BOUNDARY OF THE SHAU KEI WAN OUTLINE ZONING PLAN HAS BEEN AMENDED TO INCLUDE THE LEI YUE MUN BARRACKS AND THE ALDRICH BAY RECLAMATION DEVELOPMENT AREA.
THE BARRACKS SITE WILL BE HANDED BACK TO THE GOVERNMENT BY THE MILITARY AUTHORITIES NEXT YEAR.
THE FUTURE USE OF THE SITE IS BEING INVESTIGATED AND AS AN INTER IM MEASURE HAS BEEN ZONED FOR +UNDETERMINED+ USE.
ALSO ZONED FOR +UNDETERMINED+ USE, THE ALDRICH BAY SITE WILL INVOLVE RECLAIMING THE EXISTING TYPHOON SHELTER AND BUILDING A NEW ONE BEYOND THE LIMITS OF THE RECLAMATION AS RECOMMENDED BY THE TERRITORIAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY STUDIES IN 1984.
IT IS EXPECTED THAT OPEN SPACE AREAS, COMMUNITY FACILITIES AND HOUSING WILL EVENTUALLY OCCUPY THE 25 HECTARES OF LAND.
TO TIE IN WITH NEARBY DEVELOPMENT, THE +OPEN SPACE+
+ INDUSTRIAL+ AND +GOVERNMENT-INSTITUTION-COMMUNITY+ SITES AT THE WATERFRONT OF THE EXISTING TYPHOON SHELTER HAVE ALSO BEEN REZONED +UNDETERMINED+.
THE +UNDETERMINED+ AREAS TOTAL 63 HECTARES.
ANOTHER MAJOR AMENDMENT IS A PROPOSAL TO BUILD A PUBLIC HOUSING ESTATE AT THE SHAU KEI WAN FOOTHILL (EAST) AREA TO PROVIDE ABOUT 5 500 FLATS FOR 20 000 PEOPLE. SITE FORMATION WORK IS DUE TO START NEXT YEAR. AS PART OF THE PROJECT, A 1.7-HECTARE PARK WILL BE BUILT IN THE CENTRE OF THE ESTATE.
THE PRESENT NUNNERY ON THE SITE WILL BE RETAINED AND A SITE ON THE NORTHERN FRINGES OF THE ESTATE HAS BEEN RESERVED FOR A COMMUNITY CENTRE.
