THE URBAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT'S +HOTLINE+, WHICH OPERATES 24 HOURS A DAY TO RECEIVE COMPLAINTS AND ENQUIRIES ABOUT VARIOUS ASPECTS OF ITS ACTIVITIES, WILL BE CHANGED FROM +5-95555+ TO +5-8105599+ FROM OCTOBER 1.

ANNOUNCING THIS TODAY, A DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THE CHANGE WAS DUE TO THE CANCELLATION OF THE DISTRICT TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.
THE SPOKESMAN REMINDED MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC THAT THE ROUND-THE-CLOCK +HOTLINE + SERVICE WAS NOT CONFINED TO COMPLAINTS AGAINST LITTERING, ALTHOUGH THIS WAS A SUBJECT OF FREQUENT COMPLAINTS.
+THE HOTLINE HANDLES COMPLAINTS AND ENQUIRIES CONCERNING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF THE DEPARTMENT'S WORK, SUCH AS ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE, PEST CONTROL, HAWKERS AND MARKETS, + HE SAID,
+EACH COMPLAINT IS FOLLOWED UP AND DEALT WITH AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
+ IF THE COMPLAINT IS OF A SIMPLE NATURE, IT CAN BE DEALT WITH IN A MATTER OF HOURS. IF IT IS MORE COMPLICATED, SUCH AS ON A DEFECTIVE WATER PIPE OR A DRIPPING AIR CONDITIONER, MORE TIME WOULD BE REQUIRED AS THE DEPARTMENT HAS TO LOCATE THE OWNERS FIRST AND ASK THEM TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION WITHIN A SPECIFIED PERIOD.+
IN THE FIRST EIGHT MONTHS OF THIS YEAR, A TOTAL OF 1 577 COMPLAINTS WERE HANDLED. OF THESE, 91 PER CENT CONCERNED ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE PROBLEMS AND 60 PER CENT WERE ON LITTERING.
