4 000 FOOD PREMISES INSPECTED BY USD

TO ENSURE THAT THE FOOD TRADE IS COMPLYING WITH THE MANY NECESSARY FOOD HYGIENE REGULATIONS, THE URBAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT HAS LAUNCHED A BLITZ ON RESTAURANTS AND OTHER FOOD PREMISES.

+SO FAR, MORE THAN 4 000 LICENSED FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS INCLUDING COOKED FOOD STALLS IN THE URBAN AREA HAVE BEEN INSPECTED SINCE THE TOUGH CRACKDOWN STARTED LAST MONDAY AS PART OF THE DEPARTMENT'S STEPPED-UP EFFORTS TO SAFEGUARD PUBLIC HEALTH, SAID A SPOKESMAN FOR THE DEPARTMENT.

+A TOTAL OF 54 SUMMONSES HAVE BEEN SERVED AND 3 661 WARNINGS ISSUED TO FOOD PREMISES OPERATORS FOR HAVING CONTRAVENED THE FOOD HYGIENE REGULATIONS.+

THE SPOKESMAN SAID A DAILY AVERAGE OF ABOUT 80 INSPECTORS WERE MOBILISED FOR THE BLITZ OPERATIONS.

+ DURING THE INSPECTIONS, HEALTH INSPECTORS PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE CLEANLINESS OF THE PREMISES, PERSONAL HYGIENE OF FOOD HANDLERS AND PROPER FOOD STORAGE AND HANDLING,+ HE SAID.

+ IN ADDITION, THE HEALTH INSPECTORS BRIEF OPERATORS AND FOOD HANDLERS ON THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FOOD, ENVIRONMENTAL AND PERSONAL HYGIENE.

ABOUT 1 000 MORE FOOD OUTLETS OPERATORS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE SEMINARS BEFORE THE CAMPAIGN ENDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS MONTH.

COPIES OF THE PAMPHLET ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AT THE DEPARTMENT'S DISTRICT OFFICES FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

ONE NEW CASE OF CHOLERA

ONE NEW CASE OF CHOLERA WAS CONFIRMED TODAY (SATURDAY) BY THE MEDICAL AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CASES CONFIRMED IS NOW 21.

THE PATIENT IS A 72-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO LIVES IN YUEN LONG. HIS CONDITION IS SATISFACTORY.
