CONSUMER DURABLES AND OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ RECORDED INCREASES OF 5 PER CENT AND 2 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VALUE BUT DECREASES OF 2 PER CENT AND 1 PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN SALES VOLUME.

FUELS WENT DOWN BY 10 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT RECORDED A SLIGHT INCREASE OF 1 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ANALYSED BY SELECTED TRADES, RETAIL SALES OF SUPERMARKETS ANL OF DEPARTMENT STORES INCREASED MODERATELY IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.

MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS ROSE MODERATELY IN SALES VALUE BUT DECREASED SLIGHTLY IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES, OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS, RECORDED A SLIGHT INCREASE IN SALES VALUE BUT A SLIGHT DROP IN SALES VOLUME.

COMPARING THE THREE-MONTH PERIOD FEBRUARY-APRIL 1986 WITH THE PREVIOUS 12-MONTH PERIOD, TOTAL RETAIL SALES REMAINED ALMOST UNCHANGED IN VALUE BUT FÉLL BY 3 PER CENT IN VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY 7 PER CENT IN VALUE BUT RECORDED ALMOST NO CHANGE IN VOLUME.

CONSUMER DURABLES ROSE BY 1 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT DROPPED BY 4 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME, WHILE OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ SHOWED DECREASES OF 1 PER CENT AND 5 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND VOLUME RESPECTIVELY. FUELS WENT DOWN BY 4 PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT INCREASED BY 1 PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

ON THE OTHER HAND, BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO REMAINED ALMOST UNCHANGED.

RETAIL SALES BY SUPERMARKETS SHOWED MODERATE INCREASES IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS. MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS ROSE MODERATELY IN SALES VALUE BUT DECREASED SLIGHTLY IN SALES VOLUME.

BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME OF CONSUMER DURABLES, OTHER THAN MOTOR VEHICLES AND PARTS, SHOWED SLIGHT DECREASES, WHILE RETAIL SALES OF DEPARTMENT STORES RECORDED A SLIGHT DROP IN VALUE AND A MODERATE FALL IN VOLUME,

WHEN COMPARED WITH MARCH 1986, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON IS AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, TOTAL RETAIL SALES FOR APRIL 1986 FELL BY 2 PER CENT AND 3 PER CENT IN VALUE AND VOLUME RESPECTIVELY. RETAIL SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO REMAINED ALMOST UNCHANGED IN VALUE BUT ROSE BY 1 PER CENT IN VOLUME. WHILE THOSE OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ DECREASED BY 7 PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.
