THUS THE TRADITION OF RESPECTING THE ELDERLY COULD BE MAINTAINED WHILE THE COMMUNITY COULD TAKE OVER PART OF THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LOOKING AFTER THEM.

+ IT IS THE DUTY OF EVERY RESIDENT TO ENSURE THAT THE ELDERLY LEAD A HAPPY AND CONTENTED LIFE, AND ARE RESPECTED AND CARED FOR IN THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS IN THEIR FAMILIES, + MR CHAN SAID.

HE ALSO SAID THAT OLD PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BECOME PESSIMISTIC PECAUSE OF THE IR AGE BUT SHOULD TAKE THE INITIATIVE IN ADAPTING TO SOCIAL CHANGES.

MR CHAN NOTED THAT OVER 600 000 PEOPLE, OR SOME 11 PER CENT OF THE POPULATION, WERE AGED OVER 60. THE VARIOUS SERVICES FOR THEM PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNMENT AND SUBVENTED AGENCIES INCLUDED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, MEDICAL, HOUSING, TRANSPORT, DAY CARE, LAUNDRY AND RESIDENTIAL SERVICES.

THE GOVERNMENT'S TARGET IS THAT THERE SHOULD BE ONE CENTRE FOR THE ELDERLY FOR EVERY 30 000 PEOPLE TO PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT, RECREATIONAL, SOCIAL AND COUNSELLING SERVICES.

TWENTY-FOUR OF THE 76 CENTRES FOR THE ELDERLY ARE LOCATED IN THE NEW TERRITORIES.

THE BUTTERFLY ESTATE SOCIAL CENTRE FOR THE ELDERLY WAS THE SIXTH CENTRE FOR THE ELDERLY IN TUEN MUN, MR CHAN SAID, ADDING THAT SEVERAL MORE CENTRES WOULD COME INTO SERVICE TO COPE WITH DEVELOPMENT IN THE DISTRICT.

HE COMMENDED THE BAPTIST MID-MISSION FOR TAKING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN HONG KONG'S SOCIAL SERVICES.

HEALTHY LIFE CAMPAIGN FOR MONG KOK RESIDENTS

ENCOURAGING A WHOLESOME LIFESTYLE IS THE KEY MESSAGE OF A PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN TO BE LAUNCHED IN MONG KOK TO PROMOTE THE HEALTHY GROWTH OF YOUTH AND CHILDREN, AND TO ENHANCE BETTER UNDERSTANDING AMONG FAMILY MEMBERS.

THE PROJECT, ENTITLED +HEALTHY LIFE CAMPAIGN, IS JOINTLY ORGANISED BY THE MONG KOK DISTRICT BOARD, LOCAL RELIGIOUS BODIES AND VARIOUS VOLUNTARY AGENCIES IN THE DISTRICT.

IT IS AIMED AT COUNTERACTING THE ADVERSE EFFECTS OF PORNOGRAPHIC PUBLICATIONS ON THE MENTAL DEVELOPMENT, PHYSICAL GROWTH AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR OF YOUNG PEOPLE.
