A FLYOVER AT RUMSEY STREET AND FOOTBRIDGES AT MORRISON STREET AND TUNG HING LANE. WORK ON THIS $165 MILLION CONTRACT IS EXPECTED TO START IN SEPTEMBER.

TWO FURTHER CONTRACTS WILL FOLLOW.

THESE ARE:

* CONVERTING CONNAUGHT ROAD WEST INTO A DUAL CARRIAGEWAY

AND PROVIDING FOOTBRIDGES AT EASTERN STREET, WESTERN STREET, WATER STREET AND HILL ROAD. WORK ON THIS $45 MILLION CONTRACT WILL START IN 1987.

* EXTENDING THE CONNAUGHT ROAD WALKWAY EASTWARD AT A

COST OF $25 MILLION. WORK ON THIS WILL START IN 1988.

THE WORKS WILL AFFECT MORE THAN JUST TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIANS. FOR INSTANCE, THE WIDENING OF CONNAUGHT ROAD WILL MEAN THE RELOCATION OF THE 'POOR MAN'S NIGHT CLUB' BY THE OLD MACAU FERRY PIER. THE ROYAL HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB OFF-COURSE BETTING CENTRE BY THE STAR FERRY WILL BE MOVED TWICE: ONCE TO A TEMPORARY SITE, NEARER TO THE STAR FERRY WHILE THE SUBWAY TO THE FERRY TERMINAL IS EXTENDED, THEN AGAIN TO A PERMANENT SITE ABOVE THE NEWLY EXTENDED SUBWAY.

DURING DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCHEME, THE CONSULTANTS HAVE USED THE LATEST COMPUTER-AIDED DRAUGHTING TECHNIQUES TO PREPARE PLANS OF EXISTING AND FUTURE ROAD LAYOUTS AND OF UNDERGROUND GAS, ELECTRICITY AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS INSTALLATIONS AND FOUL AND SURFACE WATER DRAINAGE INSTALLATIONS,

MANY TRIAL PITS HAVE BEEN DUG TO CONFIRM THE POSITION OF SERVICES, AND COMPUTER-BASED RECORDS AMENDED IN THE LIGHT OF INFORMATION OBTAINED. THIS MAPPING HAS BEEN RECORDED IN +LAYERS+, ALLOWING PREPARATION OF DRAWINGS TO ANY SCALE TO INCLUDE ANY COMBINATION OF STORED INFORMATION.

ALL THIS WORK HAS ENSURED THAT THE DETAILED DESIGN OF THE NEW STRUCTURES IS ARRANGED TO MINIMISE DISRUPTION TO EXISTING UTILITIES AND TO FIT WITHIN THE RESTRICTED SPACE AVAILABLE.

OVER THE PAST 18 MONTHS THE CONSULTANTS AND THEIR TRAFFIC SUB-CONSULTANTS, THE MVA CONSULTANCY, HAVE HELD DISCUSSIONS WITH THE POLICE, TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT, CHINA MOTOR BUS, HONG KONG TRAMWAYS AND OTHERS INVOLVED IN TRAFFIC PLANNING, AND VARIOUS TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEMES HAVE BEGUN AND OTHERS WILL BE INTRODUCED WHILE CONSTRUCTION IS UNDERWAY.

THE GREATEST TRAFFIC PROBLEMS WILL BE CAUSED BY THE BUILDING OF THE PEDDER STREET UNDERPASS. THE CARRIAGEWAY WILL HAVE TO BE MOVED CLOSER TO THE SEAFRONT TO CREATE WORKING ROOM. THIS WILL INVOLVE DEMOLISHING ONE BAY OF THE STAR FERRY CARPARK, MOVING THE JOCKEY CLUB BETTING CENTRE AND EXTENDING THE STAR FERRY SUBWAY SO THE WIDENED CARRIAGEWAY CAN BE BUILT OVER THE TOP OF THE SUBWAY. THROUGHOUT THE WORK THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC WILL BE MAINTAINED IN EACH DIRECTION ALONG CONNAUGHT ROAD.
