AFTER THE OPENING OF THE MTR ISLAND LINE AT THE END OF MAY, TCU RECORDED FEWER CONGESTION-RELATED COMPLAINTS IN JUNE 1985. THE DOWNWARD TREND, HOWEVER, WAS REVERSED IN THE THREE MONTHS THAT FOLLOWED AS A RESULT OF INCREASED COMPLAINTS ABOUT PUBLIC LIGHT BUSES CONGREGATING ALONG BUSY ROADS.
DURING THE YEAR, MR PANG SAID, SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT TO ROAD CONGESTION MADE THROUGH SOME 256 COMPLAINTS WERE SUPPORTED BY THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT AND IMPLEMENTED AT 81 LOCATIONS COMPRISING 32 IN KOWLOON, 28 IN HONG KONG AND B21 IN THE NEW TERRITORIES.
THE TRANSPORT COMPLAINTS UNIT WAS SET UP UNDER THE TRANSPORT ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO RECEIVE AND MONITOR COMPLAINTS AND SUGGESTIONS ON TRANSPORT MATTERS.

THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES IN OCTOBER 1985, ESTIMATED AT $5 700 MILLION, WAS THREE PER CENT HIGHER THAN IN OCTOBER 1984, WHILE THE VOLUME WAS ONE PER CENT HIGHER, ACCORDING TO THE PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED TODAY BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.
RETAIL SALES FOR THE THREE-MONTH PERIOD AUGUST-OCTOBER 1985, WHEN COMPARED WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1984, INCREASED BY ONE PER CENT IN VALUE, BUT THE IR VOLUME REMAINED UNCHANGED.
WHEN COMPARED WITH SEPTEMBER 1985, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON IS AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, RETAIL SALES FOR OCTOBER 1985 INCREASED BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN VOLUME.
WHEN COMPARED WITH OCTOBER 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY 12 PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES ROSE BY FOUR PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF FUELS WENT UP BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. BOTH FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO AND +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ REGISTERED AN INCREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE, BUT NO CHANGE IN SALES VOLUME.
COMPARING THE THREE-MONTH PERIOD AUGUST-OCTOBER 1985 WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY NINE PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES INCREASED BY THREE PER CENT AND FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO BY TWO PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS. RETAIL SALES OF FUELS ROSE BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. ON THE OTHER HAND, RETAIL SALES OF +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ FELL BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND THREE PER CENT IN VOLUME.
