EXTRA OVERTIME HOURS NEED WORKERS' SUPPORT

MANUFACTURERS WHO WANT TO APPLY FOR ADDITIONAL OVERTIME HOURS FOR WOMEN WORKERS MUST HAVE THEIR APPLICATIONS SUPPORTED BY THE MAJORITY OF THE WORKERS AFFECTED, SENIOR LABOUR OFFICER, MR CHOW TUNG-SHAN, SAID TODAY (THURSDAY).

MR CHOW MADE THE REMARKS IN RESPONSE TO DISCUSSIONS AT A RECENT MEETING OF THE INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE TSUEN WAN DISTRICT BOARD, WHEN THE PROBLEM OF OVERTIME HOURS WAS BROUGHT UP.

HE SAID UNDER THE WOMEN AND YOUNG PERSONS (INDUSTRY) REGULATIONS, OVERTIME HOURS FOR A WOMAN WORKER COULD NOT EXCEED THE QUOTA OF 200 HOURS A YEAR.

+SOME MEMBERS OF THE SUB-COMMITTEE WERE CONCERNED THAT WHEN THE ANNUAL QUOTA WAS ALMOST USED UP AND THERE WAS A SUDDEN RUSH OF NEW ORDERS FOR CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR, MANUFACTURERS WOULD FACE DIFFICULTIES MEETING ORDERS, MR CHOW SAID.

+MANUFACTURERS IN SUCH SITUATIONS CAN APPLY FOR ADDITIONAL OVERTIME HOURS OF 50 OR MORE. PROVIDED THAT THE WORKERS' INTERESTS HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF AND THE APPLICATION HAS THE SUPPORT OF MOST WORKERS.+

MR CHOW SAID WHEN THE APPLICATION WAS SUPPORTED BY A WORKERS' OPINION POLL, IT WOULD NORMALLY BE APPROVED BY THE COMMISSIONEK FOR LABOUR WHO WOULD BE EXERCISING HIS POWER UNDER THE EMPLOYMENT ORDINANCE TO GRANT SPECIAL PERMISSION.

+ IN 1984, APPROVAL WAS GIVEN TO 49 SUCH APPLICATIONS. ONE WAS WITHDRAWN BECAUSE THE APPLICATION FAILED TO SECURE THE SUPPORT OF THE MAJORITY OF WORKERS AFFECTED,+ HE SAID.
