AUGUST RETAIL SALES SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED

THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES IN AUGUST 1985, ESTIMATED AT $5 411 MILLION, SHOWED NO CHANGE WHEN COMPARED WITH AUGUST 1984, WHILE THE IR VOLUME WAS ONE PER CENT LOWER, ACCORDING TO THE PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED TODAY BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.

RETAIL SALES FOR THE THREE-MONTH PERIOD JUNE AUGUST 1985 WHEN COMPARED WITH THE SAME PERIOD IN 1984, FELL BY THREE PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.

COMPARED WITH JULY 1985, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON IS AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, RETAIL SALES FOR AUGUST 1985 DECREASED BY ONE PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.

WHEN COMPARED WITH AUGUST 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY 11 PER CENT IN VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES SHOWED AN INCREASE OF THREE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

RETAIL SALES OF FUELS ROSE BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME, WHILE THOSE OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO ROSE BY ONE PER CENT IN VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME. ON THE OTHER HAND, RETAIL SALES OF +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ DROPPED BY FOUR PER CENT IN VALUE AND FIVE PER CENT IN VOLUME.

RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS FOR THE THREE-MONTH PERIOD JUNE-AUGUST 1985, WHEN COMPARED WITH THE SAME PERIOD OF 1984, SHOWED AN INCREASE OF SEVEN PER CENT IN VALUE BUT A DECREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. FUELS RECORDED AN INCREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.

FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO SHOWED NO CHANGE IN SALES VALUE AND RECORDED A SLIGHT INCREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES DECREASED BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME, AND OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ BY SIX PER CENT IN VALUE AND SEVEN PER CENT IN VOLUME.

WHEN COMPARED WITH JULY 1985, RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES INCREASED BY ONE PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS. CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS RECORDED A DECREASE OF TWO PER CENT IN SALES VALUE BUT NO CHANGE IN SALES VOLUME.

+OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ SHOWED NO CHANGE IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME, RETAIL SALES OF FUELS FELL BY TWO PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS WHILST THOSE OF FOODSFUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO DROPPED BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.
