JUNE RETAIL SALES SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED

THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES IN JUNE 1985, ESTIMATED AT $5 177 MILLION, WAS THREE PER CENT LOWER THAN IN JUNE 1984, WHILE THEIR VOLUME WAS FOUR PER CENT LOWER. ACCORDING TO THE PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED TODAY BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.
RETAIL SALES FELL BY ONE PER CENT IN VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME IN THE SECOND QUARTER OF 1985 WHEN COMPARED WITH THE SAME QUARTER IN 1984.
COMPARING JUNE 1985 WITH MAY 1985, AND BEARING IN MIND THAT THIS COMPARISON IS AFFECTED BY SEASONAL FACTORS, RETAIL SALES DECREASED BY SEVEN PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VÕLUME TERMS.
WHEN COMPARED WITH JUNE 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY SEVEN PER CENT IN VALUE BUT DECREASED BY ONE PER CENT IN VOLUME. FUELS, WHICH SHOWED NO CHANGE IN SALES VALUE, RECORDED A SLIGHT INCREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN SALES VOLUME.
RETAIL SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO DROPPED BY ONE PER CENT IN VALUE BUT REMAINED UNCHANGED IN VOLUME. RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES DECREASED BY SEVEN PER CENT IN VALUE AND EIGHT PER CENT IN VOLUME, WHILE THOSE OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ FELL BY SIX PER CENT IN BOTH VALUE AND VOLUME TERMS.
COMPARING THE SECOND QUARTER OF 1985 WITH THE SAME QUARTER IN 1984, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS SHOWED AN INCREASE OF SEVEN PER CENT IN VALUE TERMS BUT A DECREASE OF TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME.
FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO RECORDED AN INCREASE
FUELS OF ONE PER CENT IN SALES VALUE AND TWO PER CENT IN VOLUME. SHOWED AN INCREASE OF ONE PER CENT IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME.
RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES DECREASED BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME, WHILE THOSE OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ DROPPED BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE AND FOUR PER CENT IN VOLUME.
WHEN COMPARED WITH MAY 1985, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS RECORDED THE LARGEST DECREASE OF 15 PER CENT IN VALUE AND 16 PER CENT IN VOLUME. CONSUMER DURABLES AND +OTHER CONSUMER GOODS+ ALSO SHOWED DECREASES OF 11 PER CENT AND EIGHT PER CENT RESPECTIVELY IN BOTH SALES VALUE AND VOLUME.
