FIRST QUARTER RESTAURANT SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED

THE VALUES OF TOTAL RECEIPTS AND TOTAL PURCHASES OF THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT SECTOR IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1985 WERE ESTIMATED TO BE $4 580 MILLION AND $1 974 MILLION RESPECTIVELY. ACCORDING TO PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED TODAY (TUESDAY) BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.
COMPARED WITH THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1984, TOTAL RECEIPTS INCREASED BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE TERMS BUT REMAINED UNCHANGED IN VOLUME TERMS, WHILE TOTAL PURCHASES DECREASED BY TWO PER CENT IN VALUE TERMS. WHEN COMPARED WITH THE PRECEDING QUARTER, TOTAL RESTAURANT RECEIPTS DECREASED BY FOUR PER CENT IN VALUE AND FIVE PER CENT IN VOLUME TERMS, AND TOTAL PURCHASES DECREASED BY THREE PER CENT IN VALUE TERMS.
ANALYSED BY TYPE OF RESTAURANT, FAST FOOD SHOPS RECORDED THE LARGEST INCREASE (18 PER CENT) IN THE VALUE OF TOTAL RECEIPTS, FOLLOWED BY BARS (SEVEN PER CENT), OTHER EATING AND DRINKING PLACES (SIX PER CENT), NON-CHINESE RESTAURANTS (TWO PER CENT) AND CHINESE RESTAURANTS (ONE PER CENT) WHEN COMPARED WITH THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1984. IN VOLUME TERMS, FAST FOOD SHOPS AGAIN RECORDED THE LARGEST INCREASE (15 PER CENT IN TOTAL RECEIPTS, FOLLOWED BY BARS (TWO PER CENT). THE VOLUME OF TOTAL RECEIPTS OF OTHER EATING AND DRINKING PLACES, HOWEVER, REMAINED UNCHANGED, WHILE THOSE OF CHINESE RESTAURANTS AND NON-CHINESE RESTAURANTS DROPPED BY ONE PER CENT AND TWO PER CENT RESPECTIVELY.
