TIPS FOR AN ENJOYABLE DIP IN SWIMMING POOLS

SWIMMING AT ANY OF THE 11 URBAN COUNCIL PUBLIC SWIMMING POOL COMPLEXES CAN BE VERY REFRESHING AND ENJOYABLE DURING THE CURRENT HOT SPELL. HOWEVER, EVEN IN A SWIMMING POOL WELL GUARDED BY HIGHLY-QUALIFIED AND PROFESSIONAL LIFEGUARDS, ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN IF CARE AND CAUTION ARE NOT EXERCISED.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE URBAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT TODAY URGED THE PUBLIC TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING BASIC RULES OF SAFETY WHILE ENJOYING THEMSELVES IN A SWIMMING POOL:

+ DON'T SWIM AFTER A HEAVY MEAL NOR WITH AN EMPTY STOMACH. ALLOW AT LEAST AN HOUR AFTER A MEAL BEFORE GOING INTO WATER.

+ DON'T TAKE ALCOHOL AND DON'T CHEW GUM WHILE SWIMMING.

DON'T SWIM BELOW DIVING BOARDS BECAUSE SOMEONE MAY LAND ON YOUR HEAD.

+ DON'T USE A MASK OR FINS IN THE POOL SAVE THEM FOR THE BEACH,

DON'T RUN NEAR THE EDGE OF THE POOL FOR YOU MAY SLIP

AND FALL.

IF YOU ARE A LEARNER, STAY IN SHALLOW WATER AND DON'T GO FARTHER THAN WAIST-DEEP. CHECK AREAS WHERE THE DEPTH OF THE POOL CHANGES SUDDENLY.

IF YOUR CHILDREN CANNOT SWIM, STAY WITH THEM AT ALL TIMES IN OR NEAR WATER.

DON'T RELY ENTIRELY ON SWIMMING AIDS AND WHENEVER YOU ENCOUNTER DIFFICULTY IN THE WATER, SHOUT FOR HELP AND KEEP CALM, AS PANIC IS YOUR WORST ENEMY.
