ACCOMPANIED BY THE CHAIRMAN OF MODERN TERMINALS LIMITED,

MR D.A. GLEDHILL, AND SENIOR OFFICIALS OF THE COMPANY, SIR PHILIP WAS SHOWN AN AUDIO-VISUAL DISPLAY OF THE FACILITIES AND VISITED THE CONTROL ROOM BEFORE BOARDING A LAUNCH FOR A GENERAL VIEW OF THE AREA.

SIR PHILIP WAS MET ON BOARD BY THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF MARINE, MR K.Y. TANG, WHO EXPLAINED THAT A SIX-STOREY CARGO DISTRIBUTION AND HANDLING CENTRE, WHICH WOULD BE THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD, WAS BEING BUILT.

SIR PHILIP ALSO LOOKED AT RECLAMATION WORKS AT THE KWAI CHUNG CREEK. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO YIELD 25.5 HECTARES OF LAND BY EARLY 1987, AND INCREASE THE THROUGHPUT CAPACITY OF THE CONTAINER TERMINAL TO MEET RISING DEMAND.

HE WAS ALSO TOLD THAT A THREE-BERTH TERMINAL TO THE SOUTH OF THE RECLAMATION SITE WAS BEING PLANNED TO FURTHER INCREASE THE CAPACITY OF THE TERMINALS.

MANUFACTURERS TOLD TO UPGRADE TECHNOLOGY

HONG KONG MANUFACTURERS SHOULD CONTINUE TO UPGRADE THE IR TECHNOLOGY AND PRODUCTS AND THERE ARE ALREADY SIGNS OF INCREASED AUTOMATION, THE DIRECTOR OF INDUSTRY, MR JOHN YAXLEY, SAID TODAY (THURSDAY).

MR YAXLEY MADE THESE REMARKS WHEN HE ADDRESSED A LUNCHEON MEETING OF THE ZONTA CLUB OF THE NEW TERRITORIES.

+ IT IS EVIDENT THAT A LOT OF MANUFACTURING IN HONG KONG WHICH REQUIRES CHEAP LABOUR OR CHEAP LAND, CAN NO LONGER BE DONE IN HONG KONG AND IS INCREASINGLY BEING DONE IN CHINA.

+THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE ARE GOING TO SEE A MASSIVE EXODUS OF MANUFACTURING VENTURES FROM HONG KONG TO CHINA. WE ARE ABLE TO CONCENTRATE ON HIGH-TECHNOLOGY, THE UP-MARKET AND THE BETTER QUALITY PRODUCTS, + MR YAXLEY SAID.

+AS OUR INDUSTRY MOVES UP MARKET, IT BECOMES MUCH MORE SOPHISTICATED AND IT REQUIRES MORE ASSISTANCE FROM THE GOVERMENT. WE ARE GOING TO SEE A MUCH GREATER INVOLVEMENT IN TECHNICAL SUPPORT FGR THE INDUSTRY, HE SAID.
