MORE BETTER-EDUCATED AND HIGHLY-TRAINED PERSONNEL WERE NEEDED BY THE HOTEL AND TOURISM SECTORS OF HONG KONG'S HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY, ACCORDING TO A MANPOWER SURVEY REPORT JUST RELEASED.
AND THE HOTEL SECTOR, PARTICULARLY, WAS FEELING THE EFFECT OF COMPETITION FOR EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL FROM NEW HOTELS IN CHINA, MR LARRY TCHOU, CHAIRMAN OF THE HOTEL, CATERING AND TOURISM TRAINING BOARD OF THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING COUNCIL SAID TODAY.
REFERRING TO THE SURVEY CARRIED OUT IN MARCH LAST YEAR BY THE BOARD, WITH THE HELP OF THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT, MR TCHOU SAID THE DESIRE OF HOTEL EMPLOYERS TO RECRUIT A HIGHER PROPORTION OF DEGREE AND HIGHER DIPLOMA HOLDERS THAN FORM FIVE ENTRANTS REFLECTED THE NEED FOR A BETTER QUALIFIED WORKFORCE TO MEET INCREASING COMPETITION AND NEW CHALLENGES.
THE HOTEL SECTOR, HE SAID, WAS THE FOURTH LARGEST EMPLOYER AMONG THE EIGHT SURVEYED SECTORS OF THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY, COMPRISING HOTELS, AIRLINES, TRAVEL AGENCIES, RESTAURANTS, FAST FOOD SHOPS, BARS AND OTHER DRINKING PLACES, AND BAKERIES. !T HAD THE LARGEST NUMBER OF VACANCIES.
THE SURVEY ALSO SHOWED THAT THERE WAS LITTLE ORGANISED TRAINING FOR STAFF AT ALL LEVELS OF THE INDUSTRY.
BUT
TO UPGRADE THE STANDARD OF SERVICE, THERE WAS A NEED TO DIVERSIFY THE TYPES OF TRAINING COURSES, ESPEC. ALLY AT MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISORY LEVELS, AMONG EXISTING EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
