+ANY SUCH FOODS FOUND TO BE SUB-STANDARD WILL BE REJECTED AND DESTROYED.+

TURNING TO FOOD ITEMS WHICH ARE NOT CONTROLLED AT THE IMPORTING STAGE, HE SAID CHECKS ARE CARRIED OUT AT RETAIL OUTLETS UNDER THE ROUTINE FOOD SAFETY SURVEILLANCE PROGRAMME.

APART FROM THESE REGULAR INSPECTIONS, RANDOM PURCHASES OF VARIOUS FOOD ITEMS ARE ALSO MADE FOR EXAMINATION TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

FOOD SAMPLES COLLECTED ARE SENT TO THE GOVERNMENT LABORATORY AND THE PATHOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE MEDICAL AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT FOR TESTS TO ASCERTAIN THAT THEY ARE UP TO THE REQUIRED STANDARDS OR TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF HARMFUL ORGANISMS, BIOTOXINS, CHEMICALS, CONTAMINANTS AND TOXIC ELEMENTS, INCLUDING RADIO ACTIVE SUBSTANCES AND CARCINOGENS.

THE DEPARTMENT'S HEALTH INSPECTORS ARE ALSO SPECIALLY TRAINED IN MEAT INSPECTION. THEY WILL EXAMINE EACH CARCASS TO ENSURE THAT MEAT IS DISEASE-FREE BEFORE IT IS PASSED FOR SALE.

AS A RESULT OF THESE STRINGENT INSPECTIONS, A TOTAL OF 2 200 PIGS AND 82 CATTLE SLAUGHTERED AT THE KENNEDY TOWN AND CHEUNG SHA WAN ABATTOIRS DURING THE SAME THREE-MONTH PERIOD WERE FOUND TO BE UNFIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION AND WERE DESTROYED.

+THEY CAN HELP TENANTS IN SETTLING DOWN TO A NEW ENVIRONMENT AND IN FOSTERING GOOD SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH NEW NEIGHBOURS IN ORDER TO BUILD A NEW HEALTHY COMMUNITY.+

TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, MR LI SAID, A RESPONSIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE TENANTS SHOULD ALSO BE ADOPTED AT THE SAME TIME TO ENSURE THAT THEIR NEEDS AND WISHES ARE MET WHERE POSSIBLE AND PRACTICABLE.
