TSING YI NORTH BRIDGE CONTRACT AWARDED

THE GOVERNMENT HAS AWARDED THE CONTRACT TO BUILD THE TSING YI NORTH BRIDGE TO MAEDA-ORIENTAL JOINT VENTURE.
SIGNING THE $200 MILLION CONTRACT AT A CEREMONY TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WERE THE DIRECTOR OF NEW TERRITORIES DEVELOPMENT, MR KENNETH KWOK, AND THE HONG KONG GENERAL MANAGER OF MAEDA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY LTD AND REPRESENTATIVE OF MAEDA-ORIENTAL JOINT VENTURE, MR TETSUO OCHIAL.
WORK WILL START AT THE END OF THE MONTH AND BE COMPLETED BY MID-1987.
IT WILL INVOLVE CONSTRUCTING A BRIDGE ABOUT 1.5 KILOMETRES TO THE NORTH OF THE EXISTING TSING YI BRIDGE. THE NEW BRIDGE WILL CROSS THE NORTHERN END OF RAMBLER CHANNEL BETWEEN NGA YING CHAU IN TSING YI AND SAM PAK TSIN IN TSUEN WAN.
APPROACH ROADS LINKING THE FUTURE ROAD NETWORK IN NORTHEAST TSING YI AND THE EXISTING TEXACO ROAD ROUNDABOUT IN TSUEN WAN WILL ALSO BE BUILT.
THE BRIDGE WILL BE A DUAL TWO-LANE CARRIAGEWAY, WITH EACH SIDE BEING 7.3 METRES WIDE. IN THE MIDDLE THERE WILL BE A CONCRETE MEDIAN SEPARATING THE OPPOSING STREAMS OF TRAFFIC TO ENHANCE ROAD SAFETY.
HARDSTRIPS MEASURING 1.5 METRES AND ONE METRE IN WIDTH WILL BE PROVIDED NEXT TO THE INNER LANE AND THE MEDIAN BARRIER RESPECTIVELY, TO ALLOW TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC TO FLOW IN THE EVENT OF A VÉHICLE BREAKDOWN.
A TWO-METRE WIDE PEDESTRIAN FOOTWAY WILL BE PROVIDED ON THE NORTHERN SIDE OF THE BRIDGE WHILE ANOTHER FOOTWAY OF THE SAME WIDTH ON THE SOUTHERN SIDE WILL BE USED AS ACCESS TO UTILITIES INSTALLATIONS AND FOR EMERGENCY USES.
THE BRIDGE WILL BE SUPPORTED BY TWO PIERS TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN THE CHANNEL.
A NAVIGATIONAL CLEARANCE OF 122 METRES IN WIDTH AND 19.15 METRES IN HEIGHT WILL BE MAINTAINED SO THAT SHIPS WILL BE ABLE TO MANOEUVRE IN THE CHANNEL.
EACH OF THE PIERS WILL BE PROTECTED FROM SHIP COLLISON BY A SMALL ROCK MOUND ISLAND ON WHICH NAVIGATIONAL LIGHTS WILL BE INSTALLED TO WARN APPROACHING VESSELS.
