CONSEQUENTLY, THE DEPARTMENT URGES THE REPRESENTATIVES OF
THE CONTAINER VEHICLE OWNERS TO RECONSIDER THE DEPARTMENT'S PROPOSAL AS TO THE TRAILER LICENCE FEE. OFFICIALS OF THE DEPARTMENT ARE AVAILABLE AT ANY TIME FOR DETAILED DISCUSSION AND EXPLANATION.
CONTAINER PORT ROAD
AT A MEETING BETWEEN GOVERNMENT OFFICERS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CONTAINER VEHICLE OWNERS/ DRIVERS ON SITE IN THE CONTAINER PORT ROAD ON 10TH AUGUST, 1984, A TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL EXPLAINED THAT IF PARKING SPACES WERE DESIGNATED IN THE CONTAINER PORT ROAD, IT WAS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THEY WOULD BE PERMANENTLY OCCUPIED BY VEHICLES LOADING AND UNLOADING AND WOULD NOT THUS SOLVE THE PROBLEM THEY WERE CREATED TO SOLVE. THE REPRESENTATIVES RELUCTANTLY ACCEPTED AN ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL MADE BY THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT THAT A SECTION OF THE CLEARWAY BE DERESTRICTED TO ALLOW TAXIS TO STOP AND THAT WRITTEN AGREEMENT BE OBTAINED FROM THE THREE TERMINAL OPERATORS PERMITTING PRIVATE CARS TO ENTER THE TERMINALS FOR THE COLLECTION OF NECESSARY SHIPPING DOCUMENTS. THE DEPARTMENT ALSO COUNSELS THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CONTAINER VEHICLE OWNERS AND DRIVERS TO RECONSIDER THE DEPARTMENT'S SUGGESTED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF PARKING ON THE CONTAINER PORT ROAD. WHILE THAT PROPOSED BY THE REPRESENTATIVES IS CAPABLE OF PHYSICAL
IMPLEMENTATION, THE DEPARTMENT NOT ONLY DOUBTS THAT IT WOULD IN PRACTICE SOLVE THE PROBLEM FACED BY CONTAINER VEHICLE DRIVERS BUT ALSO CONSIDERS THAT IT WOULD PROBABLY GENERATE A DIFFERENT BUT SERIOUS TRAFFIC PROBLEM LEADING TO THE INTERMITTENT BLOCK ING OF THE ROAD.
ONCE AGAIN MAY I SAY THAT THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT IS WILLING TO DISCUSS THESE ISSUES IN DETAIL AT ANY TIME WHICH MAY BE CONVENIENT EITHER TO YOU OR TO THE CONTAINER VEHICLE OWNERS AND DRIVERS.
