$233M HOUSING TENDER APPROVED

A SECOND RENTAL PUBLIC HOUSING ESTATE IS TO RISE ON THE ISLET OF AP LEI CHAU OFF ABERDEEN, TO PROVIDE MODERN HOMES FOR 37 000 MORE PEOPLE BY 1988.

CONSTRUCTION WORK WILL BEGIN SHORTLY FOR THE FIRST PHASE OF THE LEI TUNG ESTATE UNDER A KING-SIZED TENDER, VALUED AT $233.5 MILLION, JUST APPROVED BY THE HOUSING AUTHORITY'S BUILDING COMMITTEE.

+FOUR 35-STOREY TRIDENT BLOCKS WILL BE BUILT IN THE FIRST PHASE TO HOUSE 15 000 PEOPLE IN 4 020 MODERN FLATS BY 1986,+ SAID A SPOKESMAN FOR THE AUTHORITY TODAY.

OTHER WORKS WILL INCLUDE THE CONSTRUCTION OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL, A COMMERCIAL CENTRE, A MARKET AND CARPARK BUILDING, AS WELL AS A COMMUNITY HALL WITH PARKING FACILITIES.

LEI TUNG ESTATE WILL BE DEVELOPED IN THREE PHASES ON A 16-HECTARE SITE NEAR THE AP LEI CHAU BRIDGE.

WHEN COMPLETED, IT WILL BECOME A SELF-CONTAINED COMMUNITY WITH EIGHT RENTAL AND SEVEN. HOME OWNERSHIP BLOCKS, PLUS A WIDE RANGE OF FACILITIES.

THE FIRST PUBLIC HOUSING PROJECT ON AP LEI CHAU, NAMED AFTER THE ISLET, WAS COMPLETED IN 1982 AND HOUSES 19 000 PEOPLE.

EX-GRATIA PAYMENT SCHEME NOT TO BE EXTENDED

THE MARKETS AND STREET TRADERS SELECT COMMITTEE OF THE URBAN COUNCIL DECIDED AT ITS MEETING TODAY (WEDNESDAY) NOT TO EXTEND THE EX-GRATIA PAYMENT SCHEME FOR LICENSEES OF ON-STREET COOKED FOOD STALLS.

THIS IS BECAUSE THE SCHEME HAS FULFILLED THE OBJECTIVES FOR WHICH IT WAS DESIGNED.

DURING THE MEETING CHAIRED BY MR SHUM CHOI-SANG, MEMBERS EVALUATED THE SCHEME IN GREAT DETAIL.

THE CONSENSUS OF OPINION WAS THAT OPERATORS OF ON-STREET COOKED FOOD STALLS WERE FULLY AWARE OF THE SCHEME AND IF THEY HAD NOT TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF IT BEFORE ITS EXPIRY, THEY WERE UNLIKELY TO JOIN IT NOW.
