ON CATEGORY 649 (MAN-MADE FIBRE BRASSIERES, ETC) AND PART OF CATEGORY 359 (COTTON COVERALLS/JUMPSUITS/HUNTING SUITS AND COTTON OVERALLS), THE CONSULTATIONS WERE DEFERRED PENDING FURTHER CONSIDERATION OF THE CASES. IN THE MEANTIME HONG KONG WILL CONTINUE TO HOLD EXPORT AUTHORISATIONS AT THE PRESENT LEVELS.

THE SPOKESMAN SAID THAT EXPORT AUTHORISATIONS HAD ALREADY BEEN ISSUED UP TO THE LIMITS IN THREE OF THE FIVE CATEGORIES (CATEGORY 337, PART OF CATEGORY 359 AND CATEGORY 649).

IN PART OF CATEGORY 659 (MAN-MADE FIBRE SWIMSUITS) OUTSTANDING APPLICATIONS WILL ABSORB THE REMAINING AVAILABLE EXPORT AUTHORISATIONS WITHIN THE 1984 LIMIT.

IN CATEGORY 650 (MAN-MADE FIBRE DRESSING GOWNS), A SPECIAL EXPORT AUTHORISATION SCHEME IS LIKELY TO BE HELD TO DISPOSE OF THE BALANCE OF EXPORT AUTHORISATIONS UP TO THE 1984 LIMIT, AND AN ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE MADE TO THE TRADE.

THE HONG KONG DELEGATION TO THE CONSULTATIONS WAS HEADED BY MR HAMISH MACLEOD, DIRECTOR OF TRADE, AND THE U.S. SIDE BY MR RON SORINI, ASSISTANT CHIEF TEXTILE NEGOTIATOR.

TEACHERS NEED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL FROM TIME TO TIME TO

BE RETRAINED, NOT ONLY TO LEARN AFRESH BUT TO RE-CHARGE THE IR BATTERIES AND BE UPDATED, THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, MR COLVYN HAYE, SAID TODAY (FRIDAY).

SPEAKING AT THE GRADUATION CEREMONY OF THE FOURTH RETRAINING COURSE OF THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE IN EDUCATION (ILE), MR HAYE STRESSED RETRAINING WAS IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY FOR LANGUAGE TEACHERS.

+WITH THE HELP OF LANGUAGE TEACHERS, CHILDREN LEARN TO READ, WRITE AND SPEAK BETTER AND SO BECOME EDUCATED.

+THAT'S WHY LANGUAGE -- AND ONLY LANGUAGE --CAN UNLOCK THE DOOR TO LEARNING. AND OUR EDUCATION IS ONLY AS GOOD AS TEACHERS CAN MAKE IT, HE SAID.

TEACHERS NEEDED TO BE +PROFESSIONALLY UPDATED+ AS MUCH HAD CHANGED SINCE THEY WERE FIRST QUALIFIED FOR TEACHING IN SCHOOLS, .MR HAYE SAID.

HE ADDED THAT RETRAINING DID NOT MEAN THROWING PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE AWAY, BUT RATHER TO ENABLE TEACHERS TO LEARN NEW APPROACHES SO THAT THEY COULD RE-PRESENT THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN MORE EFFECTIVE WAYS.
