AT THE WESTERN END, GLOUCESTER ROAD DOWNSTREAM OF THE CORRIDOR WOULD BE REDUCED TO TWO LANE TRAFFIC BECAUSE ROADWORK ASSOCIATED WITH THE GLOUCESTER ROAD FLYOVER WAS BEING CARRIED OUT.

BUT THIS BOTTLENECK WOULD BE REMOVED AFTER COMPLETION OF THE WORK, WHEN THE CORRIDOR IS OPENED TO TRAFFIC.

MR TSOH SAID THAT PLANS WERE IN HAND TO WIDEN THE CARRIAGE- WAY OF VICTORIA PARK ROAD FROM THREE TO FOUR LANES.

FURTHER DOWNSTREAM, IN GLOUCESTER ROAD, THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE TAILING BACK OF THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL QUEUE. HOWEVER, THIS COULD BE OVERCOME BY EXTENDING THE EXISTING SCHEME TO DISALLOW VEHICLES FROM USING THE EXIT IN GLOUCESTER ROAD OUTSIDE WORLD TRADE CENTRE TO COVER A LONGER PERIOD, FROM 8 AM TO 7 PM.

THE SCHEME HAD PROVED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN IMPROVING TRAFFIC FLOW IN THE MAIN CARRIAGEWAY OF GLOUCESTER ROAD TO THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL, HE SAID.

MR TSOH SAID THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT WAS CLOSELY MONITORING THE EFFECT OF THE TAX RECENTLY IMPOSED ON THE USE OF THE CROSS HARBOUR TUNNEL WHICH TENDED TO REDUCE THE TUNNEL QUEUE FROM ALL DIRECTIONS.

AT THE EASTERN END OF THE CORRIDOR, TRAFFIC IN SAI WAN HO WOULD LIKELY BECOME HEAVIER UNTIL THE CORRIDOR WAS EXTENDED FURTHER TO SHAU KEI WAN IN 1985, MR TSOH SAID.

TO IMPROVE THE ROAD CAPACITY FOR WESTBOUND TRAFFIC ALONG SHAU KEI WAN ROAD, A SECTION OF THE TRAM TRACK HAD ALREADY BEEN MOVED TO THE NORTH, SO AS TO GIVE AN ADDITIONAL LANE FOR THE CENTRAL-BOUND TRAFFIC.

THE LAYOUT AT THE JUNCTION OF SHAU KEI WAN ROAD WITH TAI KOO SHING ROAD WAS BEING MODIFIED TO ALLOW A BETTER MOVEMENT OF CENTRAL-BOUND TRAFFIC WISHING TO ENTER THE CORRIDOR VIA TAI KOO SHING.

TRAFFIC FLOW IS EXPECTED TO BECOME SMOOTHER WHEN A FOOTBRIDGE ACROSS SHAU KEI WAN ROAD AT THIS JUNCTION IS COMPLETED WITHIN A MONTH'S TIME.

TO REDUCE THE ADVERSE EFFECT OF THE THROUGH TRAFFIC ON THE TAI KOO SHING ESTATE, A NEW TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEME WOULD BE IMPLEMENTED IN TAI KOO SHING.

UNDER THE SCHEME, A ONE-WAY GYRATORY TRAFFIC SYSTEM WOULD BE INTRODUCED IN THE TAI KOO SHING AREA.

AND TRAFFIC SIGNALS WITH PEDESTRIAN PHASES WOULD BE INSTALLED AT TWO JUNCTIONS IN THE ESTATE. ALL THE TRAFFIC SIGNALS IN THE AREA WOULD BE PUT UNDER CENTRAL COMPUTER CONTROL TO REGULATE THE FLOW OF CORRIDOR TRAFFIC THROUGH TAI KOO SHING TO MANAGEABLE LEVELS, HE SAID.
