THE GOVERNOR, SIR EDWARD YOUDE, AND LADY YOUDE LEFT FOR LONDON THIS (SATURDAY) MORNING.

THEY WERE SEEN OFF AT THE AIRPORT BY THE CHIEF SECRETARY, SIR PHILIP HADDON-CAVE.

FEWER COMPLAINTS ABOUT TRANSPORT REPORTED

THERE WERE FEWER TRANSPORT COMPLAINTS IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE YEAR, A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID TODAY (SATURDAY).

DURING THE PERIOD, 1 084 COMPLAINTS WERE MADE TO THE TRANSPORT COMPLAINTS UNIT, A 25 PER CENT DROP OVER THE PREVIOUS QUARTER'S 1 443.

THE TRANSPORT COMPLAINTS UNIT (TCU) WAS SET UP UNDER THE TRANSPORT ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO RECEIVE AND MONITOR COMPLAINTS AND SUGGESTIONS ON TRANSPORT MATTERS.

THE PUBLIC MAY COMPLAIN TO TCU BY DIALLING 5-776866, THE UNIT'S HOTLINE, ON A 24-HOUR BASIS.

IN THE LATEST QUARTERLY REPORT RELEASED TODAY, THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF TCU, MR STEPHEN PANG, ATTRIBUTED THE DOWNWARD TREND TO FEWER COMPLAINTS ABOUT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICES AND TRAFFIC ENGINEERING MATTERS.

NEVERTHELESS, PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICES WERE STILL THE MAIN SUBJECT OF COMPLAINTS, HE ADDED.

A TOTAL OF 509 CASES FELL INTO THIS CATEGORY, REPRESENTING 47 PER CENT OF ALL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED IN THE QUARTER.

+SERVICES BY THE TWO FRANCHISED BUS COMPANIES WERE SUBJECT

TO FEWER COMPLAINTS, MR PANG SAID.

THERE WERE 116 COMPLAINTS CONCERNING CMB, COMPARED WITH 148 IN THE PREVIOUS QUARTER, AND 34 COMPLAINTS AGAINST CMB STAFF, DOWN FROM 62.

MR PANG SAID THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS AGAINST KMB ALSO FELL FROM 260 TO 191, DUE MAINLY TO FEWER COMPLAINTS ABOUT INADEQUATE BUS SERVICE.

BUT COMPLAINTS IN THIS CATEGORY STILL ACCOUNTED FOR 82 CASES (42 PER CENT OF 191), WITH ONE-HALF OF THE CASELOAD BEING COMPLAINTS FROM RESIDENTS OF SHA TIN AND TUEN MUN.

+COMPLAINTS AGAINST KMB STAFF REMAINED LOW (23 CASES) AS IN THE PREVIOUS QUARTER (26 CASES), HE SAID.
